PV - Yelapa vs Las Caletas excursions

We're cruising to Puerto Vallarta in February 2018. We've visited PV the past two years and been to Las Caletas on the Beach Hideaway excursion both trips.

We, for the most part, enjoyed Las Caletas in '16 and '17 but we're looking to do something a little different this time around, and the "Yelapa Beach & Majahuitas Snorkel Tour" stood out as something we might like to try.

Looking for advice from anyone who has been on both excursions.

The Yelapa excursion is quite a bit cheaper but seems to rate just as well based on the reviews we've been reading. Are there any real turn-offs about the Yelapa tour that make the $40/pp savings not really worth it?

Thanks much in advance,

Jim

We have not taken a tour (we live in PV part of the year) but have certainly visited Yalapa (easy to do via a boat from various spots in and around PV). You have been to Las Caletas which is property leased by Vallarta Adventures and improved (by them) to create a lovely place for a day or evening tour. Yalapa is completely different in that it is a genuine indian (for lack of a better term) village that until recent years did not even have any electricity (that has now been resolved). At Yalapa you can walk through the village and see various structures (some run down and others in decent shape) and hike to a nearby waterfall (no guarantee there will be much water). The village also has a few cafes and a beach area (not nearly as nice as the beach at Las Caletas. Like Las Caletas, going to Yalapa involves a long (from the Marina) boat ride.

P.S. If you do go to Yalapa look for the "pie lady" and buy one (or more) of her flavorful and popular pies

We own a condo in Puerto Vallarta and like people have said Yelapa is very nice easy to get to and not expensive. Depending on how long you have you can take a bus ride from the port into the city and enjoy the city for a bit and then catch a water taxi to Yelapa or start with Yelapa and finish in the beautiful city of PV.

A bus into town will cost you less than $1,00 just take the blue busses saying Centro and on the return saying Walmart.

Here’s a link for the water taxis.

We are actually leaving January 07th for one month at our place in PV can’t wait.

Sea ya

I'm curious too about the Yelapa and Majahuitas tour.....anyone??

If you make your own arrangements be aware you need a lot more time to get there and back. Shipstours are done by Vallarta Adventures and they pickup at the dock. However you cannot book with them if you are on a ship.

  • 3 weeks later...

We were recently on the Oosterdam and took the Yelapa tour with Vallarta Adventures (through the ship). This was one of the best tours we've taken in awhile! The staff were great, energetic, good food. We had an amazing unexpected encounter with a mama and calf whale and received a wealth of information from our guide. The walk to the waterfall on Yelapa was interesting, you could take a dip if you wanted. Quite a climb up a hill, afterwards we walked to a beach area where we could relax before our return boat ride. Free flowing drinks on the way back with dancing and fun by all onboard. Enjoy!

My husband and I have booked the Yelapa & Mahajuitas tour through the ship (Norwegian Star) for this coming March. Curious if we have to stay with the tour group when we get to Yelapa or can we walk to the waterfall faster than the group that wants the narrated tour? I know you can snorkel around the boat or sun on the beach if you don't want to do the hike but just wondering if you get the ability to tackle the waterfall hike at a faster pace so you can spend more time swimming at the waterfall?

Thank you in advance.
