Royal aft balconie soot issue?

Hi we are thinking of booking on the Royal and am wondering if anyone recently on or currently on the Royal can tell me if the soot/ash issue has been resolved. I remember when she first came out people posted of the soot on the balconies due to the length of the ship and position of the funnels. I know they tried to outfit them with extenders and I believe people were still reporting soot issues......just wondering if this is still an on going issue?

Hmm thanks. That is something to think about...did you find that you tracked it into the cabin or had it on your feet if you went out barefoot? Did it have a smoke/ash smell out there...that smell really bothers my sinuses and wouldn't want it to ruin me being able to use the fab balcony...as there is another ship possibly I could book for similar itinerary.

We recently sailed on the Royal, although we never had a a aft balcony there was a lot of soot and Ash on the decks. All the top of the balcony deviders where stained too.

Interesting.

I sailed 25 days in an aft suite on Emerald deck and a few spots but no tracking of soot or ash.

Annie really....we were looking at one of the suites on dolphin or Caribe..We would be doing the Alaska sailing and didn't want to have to worry/bother with soot getting on the blankets or what not we may have with us when we are out on deck. We are planning on taking advantage of the balcony quite a bit so we didn't want to have to deal with the constant cleaning or putting towels down or getting the soot on blankets or slippers....

I can't speak for those decks alas but I can honestly say the only soot I had were a couple of spots. Nothing on clothes, towels or blankets and I was looking.

Maybe being on a lower deck, I was protected? I have read that a lot depends upon wind direction and speed.

I can only speak as I found.

Annie thanks for the info. We will keep this as our backup as we do like some of the amenities the Royal ship has to offer. We were on the Regal in an awesome sideways interior room so for that the ship is great was just worried about the soot. Thanks for your honesty.

Emerald never had a soot problem only Royal & Regal, that problem has been resolved, what stains & soot on ledges is due to bad cleaning from the previous mess & it was quite bad.

Boca Annie was stating she was on the Emerald deck not the Emerald princess ship.

I'm confused. With the modern technology, I was under the impression that todays ships were propelled by electricity to the pods. What would be producing the "soot".

I could understand in the decades past when ships used coal for power, but not today.

I am no engineer but perhaps it is the burning of the fuel. I know on all of the princess ships I have been on I have seen smoke coming out of the funnels...which due to the new design of the royal class ships that smoke is falling down onto the aft balconies making the soot issue. I am sure there is someone more technical than me that can explain the why and how but that is the layman's info I have.

Where do you think the electricity comes from? It’s not as if the ship trails a long extension cord. The main engines burn bunker fuel (oil) to generate the electricity used for propulsion as well as everything else on the ship. The spot comes from the exhaust of the burned fuel

oil.

Thanks for the snarky remark....reminds me of a joke one of the ships captains told.....

Only to think of today's stipulations on how much exhaust and type can be emitted to be enviromentally correct

emissions need to be kept at a minimum. So unless there is a major malfunction, soot, should be a minimum distraction.

I agree it should be minimum but its not.....

So as I stated earlier I followed the launch of the Royal and saw all the posts about the soot on the aft balconies. It was later said that because the funnels were moved more forward and the royal class is longer than the grand class they were getting the deposits. They tried adding extenders which we also saw on the Regal when we were on it. But folks were still saying that despite that the aft balconies had soot and when we visited the aft pool area on Regal there was little bits of black flakes everywhere and when stepped on made a lovely trail of black soot every where one went..which is why I had posed the question. I had not heard comments lately and wasn't sure if it was because it was fixed or it was simply one of the things we know to expect on the royal class ships like the majority of balconies are smaller than on other ships. I was not trying to start an environmental issue regarding the soot just curious as I didn't want to deal with cleaning and looking out for the soot on what we plan to be our special vow renewal cruise.

Saving this. Will be on the Caribe deck aft on the Royal in a week. Will post afterwards. I also am super sensitive to environmental allergens/chemicals/etc

Oh great thanks so much for that. Once back if you could also tell me which cabin as i am curious to how the cabin is as well. We would be doing the suite and our friends the balcony next to it...hope they have the connector so we can open it and go back and forth.[emoji6]

When we were on the Royal in December 2013 in an owner's suite on Dolphin deck and my brother and sister-in-law were in the aft balcony cabin next to us we initially were disappointed to discover that there was not a connector between the two balconies but then it didn't matter because the balconies were unusable due to soot.

We are just off the Royal on Nov 30th. We had an aft rear facing cabin - E730.....The soot is not such a big deal....there was minor evidence of soot which we learned from crew members that it comes from them burning the paper at night. It has nothing to do with the engines and there was never any odor of any kind. If you love the sound of the wake, take the aft rear facing cabin and your room steward will take care of the minor inconvenience of soot. It is a larger cabin and the view is well worth it. Another post mentioned soot in other areas of the ship; we never saw that and this was our 5 th time on the Royal. Just accept it and move on- those are the best cabins ever.

We were on Regal in an aft cabin on Dolphin Deck. We had some minor soot issues but nothing that would inhibit our use of the balcony.

Just off the Royal after a five day cruise. The only thing that bothered me were the smokers back there.

Princess should ban smoking entirely on all their ships in my opinion.

The casino smells like one huge dirty ashtray.

Just returned from 10 days in the Caribbean on Royal Princess, aft suite D726. No problem with soot. Did always wear flip flops or slippers out on balcony. Used beach towels on seat cushions as they did have some old soot stains.

Never any soot issue leaning on the railing. Pleasantly surprised after reading so many negative posts about the soot.
