Granville Island Question

Recommended Posts

We would like to go to Granville Island while we are doing a pre-cruise stay in Vancouver -- we will be staying at the Marriott Pinnacle. We have taken the HOHO bus before and gone via that route. Is there any other way to get to GI without taking the HOHO or a metro bus?

You can walk if you are adventurous, it is probably a 30-minute walk from your hotel across to the Sea Taxi stop across to Granville Island. It is very direct from your hotel, straight down Thurlow St. The Sea Taxi stop is behind the Aquatic centre at the end of Thurlow.

A Taxi will get you there as well.

Or... You can take the transit bus from Granville street, about a 10-minute walk, from your hotel. Take the # 50 down to Granville Island and get off when you get under the Granville Bridge.

Thank you for your suggestions. We have done the walk before and it was a bit taxing --- was hoping for a closer pick up point. I guess we will have to consider either the taxi or the bus.

If memory serves you were in the Pinnacle on one of your prior visits - so yes, you're looking at the same over-a-mile walk to get a little ferry (the Aquatic Centre stop would be the one that you used with a free HOHO ticket if you took advantage of that deal last time around). Unfortunately there are no water-based transport routes that go from the Coal Harbour side around the park and into False Creek except crappy 'dinner cruises' in the evenings (and most of them start on the False Creek side), so the #50 bus is the way to go.

Cab fares involve a long proportionate detour either over another bridge or just flying over the 'island' on Granville before looping back to get to sea level so I'd assume $20 fare each way (including tip unless traffic is unusually heavy - but getting out at Kids Market as soon as you get onto GI could easily save several dollars as it's often slower to drive than walk around the Island, and the mostly-one-way system means that getting to the Public Market/Theater taxi rank sees the meter tick up and up just like waiting to get into Canada Place!)

martincath - Good memory. Yes, we were at the Marriott Pinnacle. We did do the walk on one of our previous visits --- downhill was easy, uphill coming back was tiresome especially since we had already done a lot of walking seeing the sights. If we decide to go, it looks like the bus will be our best bet. Thanks.
