Post cruise - Kuala Lumpur instead of Singapore?

Hi there, I'm on a cruise that finishes in Singapore in Feb 2019 - for some reason the flights back to Scotland are shockingly expensive from Sigapore over that period. We had been thinking of a couple of days in Singapore (although we've been there before). The flights back from KL are half the price and so we were thinking of flying there and having a few days before we come home - never been there before.

Just wondering if anyone has done this or can input on any issues to consider that I might have missed?

Thank you!

We had a 24-hour stop-over in KL en-route to Aus.

Same reason as you - Air Malaysia was the cheapest option

(flight from LHR was on the big d/d Airbus - very comfortable).

24 hours in KL was more than enough. Other than the Petronas Towers we found the city boring, as was the ho-ho route - we didn't get off & the only worthwhile stop was at a palace near the airport (didn't get off due to time-constraints).

Also dining out was quite limited and surprisingly expensive.

Mebbe your own research will be better than ours, especially if you research the surrounding area - because it was just a stop-over we didn't put any effort into research.

We weren't impressed, mebbe other posters can be more positive .

In a land based trip, we enjoyed KL more than Singapore. Singapore is lovely, but essentially just another city. Our group of two well traveled senior citizen couples felt it could be picked up and moved to any place else in the world. Our favorite area was Little India.

we enjoy travelling and seeing different ways of life, different cultures, street markets, and especially different foods. We eat at street stalls (incredibly clean in both cities, as well as other Asian cities). We aren't museum people, and, frankly, don't visit many touristy 'must go' sites when we travel. Accordingly, KL was a better experience for US.

The city was also a very comfortable and interesting intro into the Muslim culture and religion. Priceless experience.

another thing you might consider: look to see what air arrangements you can sort out departing from Senai Airport in Malaysia. It's a 50 minute easy bus ride from Singapore. Heck, it might be cheaper to take a flight from there in one of the very good budget Asian airlines to KL for your trip home, and avoid flying out of Singapore entirely. That's what we did, saving hundreds of dollars. Using that itinerary, if you wanted, you could spend a few days in both cities.

Unlike John Bull, we did not find KL more expensive or lacking restaurants. But everyone looks for different experiences.

hope this helps.

We’ve done this a couple of times, and if you can get flights via Amsterdam with Malaysian rather than Heathrow, even better. We’ve stayed at the airport hotel for short stays a couple of times, not the transit hotel, this was a great option, and we’ve recently stayed at the Hilton opposite the central station, very nice hotel and you can get there directly with the airport train. Personally, I prefer Singapore, but KL makes a nice change. You can make side trips to Penang or Malucca, we haven’t been to the highlands but Ive heard they are nice too.

We have done it. Why not see both. We have spent the last four winters in SE Asia and often use KL as an airline gateway to Australia and Singapore. We did this last winter. Not on a cruise but we did fly into Singapore to start our travels.

Lots of flights from Singapore to KL. We have used AirAsia extensively for travel in the area. There are several other good regional airlines.

Here is out take. IF the fare delta flying from KL instead of Singapore pays for air and hotel in KL why not? You will find that 4 and 5 star hotels are much less expensive in KL. We spent three days (last Feb) in an upgrade room at KL Marriott Renaissance (we have stayed there before) for $125 USD per night. It included a great breakfast. Booked it directly through Marriott, pay in advance, no refund. It was our second time in KL.

Lots of interesting sights. Great, inexpensive food. Good transit. Alternatively, you could go to Penang and spend a few days.

I would highly recommend that you understand when Chinese New Year is. If it approximates the timewhen you are going to be in Singapore or KL make you reservations early!
