Koningsdam Cabins

We are looking at sailing on the Koningsdam in March, 2018. In the past, we have selected guarantee cabins and have been very fortunate with upgrades and final cabin assignments. However, this year, we are looking at some of the Verandas -- more specifically with what looks like large balconies and selecting our own cabin rather than a guarantee.

Would like opinions of what you think would be a good choice. Cabin VH4044 or VH 4043. Cabin V5096 or V5113, V5141, Cabin V6128 or V6143.

We sailed on the Nieu Amsterdam a few years ago and our guarantee ended up in one of the cabins with a balcony that they classified as obstructed because the life boat was to the side of it, but this was a fantastic cabin for us. The balcony was deep enough for two loungers and then two chairs and a table toward the front. We just loved the cabin, so thought that the above looked like they might have the deep balconies.

Also, wanted your thinking on the VH 4044 or VH 4043 since these rooms are wider -- but the balconies look large, but not necessarily deep.

Was hoping some of you had stayed in one of these or had more experience with deck plans to determine size.

In advance, thanks so much for your help!

This will be celebrating our 45th anniversary.

We board Koningsdam in 5 days and are booked into cabin 4020. Huge balcony, with a steel railing. Some people find not having a plexiglass railing a deal breaker, but considering the size of the balcony, easy access to the Dutch Cafe on deck 3, and the very attractive price, the steel railing is not an issue for us.

We return May 14th and I'll be happy to report our experience with this cabin.

The two cabins you mention which are on deck 4 would give you a perfect view of the lifeboats near you - VH means "obstructed" and as far as we could see they really are obstructed and the reason why they are the cheapest balcony cabins available, o.k. if you either go for pricing or just to have a balcony with or without a view. The VB cabins on deck 4 towards the aft or the front of the ship have large balconies but are only partly covered - I think they'd be a good choice but people from the balconies higher up overlook about a third of the balcony. If you don't mind a steel railing instead of a plexiglass one and won't sail too much in heavy seas the VF cabins on deck 4 might be a good choice, too.

In regard of the cabins you mention on decks 5 and 6 it depends a bit if you'd prefer a view to the front which is a bit more windy or towards the aft. These latter ones are connected cabins ( with a door to the cabin next of you) which MIGHT be a bit noisier.

I hope that helps a bit with the decision! We thought the Koningsdam a lovely ship and will sail on her again in a few weeks!

Happy Anniversary! Do take a peek at V5048. This is truly the "OMG" cabin on the K-Dam. Larger cabin and the balcony is HUGE!

Cheers!

We were in cabin V 6128 on the Koningsdam last month and loved it.

The balcony is huge, almost as big as the room (minus the closet and bathroom). It is fully covered and could probably seat 6-8 people. Unfortunately the only furniture provided are two chairs, one small low side table with a top not much bigger than a large dinner plate, and only one footstool. When we requested a second footstool we were told we were only allowed

one😲

The balcony was completely private, mostly shady, and deep enough to get away from the wind. Since there is a limited amount of outdoor shaded public deck space we spent many pleasant hours there.

When we booked we knew this was a connecting cabin and that some people found them noisy. We did not notice any bothersome noise, but it may have been because we had quiet neighbors 😊

We had 5113 on our fall TA on the Koningsdam and loved it. The huge balcony was great. On the day we had rain, we could still sit on the balcony with our chairs pulled back and be out of the rain. And on days that were sunny, just pull the chairs closer to the rail.

We also loved the location of being mid-ship.

It was a nice quiet location.

Congratulations on celebrating your 45th anniversary.

We have sailed on the Vista class ships in a Neptune Suite (NA) and the people next to us asked for a lounger.

The did get one but within a couple of days they asked for it to be removed. They could not move around their verandah.

Take 6128. I cruised Koningsdam last year and was in 6142. That side of the ship is the best for coming into ports as you get to entertain yourself with all the activity. That area of ship is also good in that there is not a lot of movement felt unless the seas get real bumpy.

So I know this is an old thread, but I had a question about VH cabins 4043 and 4044 which only seem to be mentioned here and did not want to create a new thread. I have a VH guarantee booked in June but just noticed that cabins 4043 and 4044 are available (they had not been previously). These are the cabins that seem to be larger than the normal VH and have larger balconies (the attachment has a snippet of the deck plan from a TA website; the green dot means it's available). Has anyone stayed in one of these cabins? I'm trying to figure out if I should take one or just hold out for my assignment and hope that I get upgraded to something better. The HALfacts website does not have any photos of them.

Yes the dividers can be opened, just ask your cabin steward and he will unlock them for you. We have 11 balcony cabins on the Koningsdam next March and are looking forward to spending time on the balconies all opened up!! Enjoy your cruise!!

We were on Kdam last month. I almost always book a guarantee and I did for that cruise. Well, I will NEVER book a guarantee again. Been on over 35 cruises and this was the worst assignment ever. Had to fight everyone to get our cabin changed.Nobody wanted to help us and they waited so long to post our assignment that there was nearly nothing to switch to. I don't care about the view in the Caribbean, but we had a room assigned over the Queen's Lounge. The 4th floor shakes and booms while the band plays. Do not get a room on the 4th floor anywhere mid ship!!! Do not leave this up to chance, as I was not the only one who wasn't happy. It ended up being a great cruise, but it's the first time I actually dreaded going on vacation. I was worried that we wouldn't get any sleep. Thankfully I was able to change my cabin a few days before. We walked by our original assignment and it was even worse than I had imagined.

we felt that the balcony cabins were a lot smaller than on other HAL ships. Didn't like the layout for Vista with bed next to balcony. Don't think we will book this new designed ship in the future. Sel de Mer was the only new thing we liked.

So what cabin did you end up in and what were you given originally? I don't recall seeing other complaints here about deck 4 cabins being loud.

As for waiting a long time for the assignment, isn't that pretty typical for HAL?

I ended up taking 4043 which is on the other side of the ship from the Queen's Club (and further forward) and next to the front elevator bank (just between what is the theater and casino area on deck 3). Hopefully I will not have an issue. I could have gone with a guarantee (I posted earlier about whether to take 4043) but decided that I liked that cabin since it was a bit larger rather than taking my chance on an upgrade and a possibly worse cabin.

This is a really great way to cruise with friends and family. We've done it more than once and opening up the balcony dividers is really a great way to share space "go next door" without having to leave your cabin. Eleven in a row? Wow! Have fun!
