Emotional Support Animals No Longer Allowed on Royal Caribbean Cruise Ships

Recommended Posts

I saw this and came to Cruise Critic to see what was being posted. I can't believe it isn't being discussed so I will start the discussion and say finally, it's about time and I hope it is enforced.

I hope this is effective across all the RCCL brands. I'm sorry but the dippy dog in the baby stroller and the "support dog" being held by the casino hostess while the owner gambled... just ticks me off. Service dogs are working "heroes" and those that need them, NEED THEM.

PS: when I'm at the tables or a slot machine, feeding it $100 bills, I NEED a support animal but somehow I survive!

Yes! I'm sorry, but those tiny dogs that are being pushed around the ship in strollers are not service dogs. I don't mind at all seeing the dogs who legitimately help their owners with tasks like turning off and on lights and such. But "emotional support' animals do not belong on cruises.

I can see those who are determined to bring Fido on the ship, will now get the certificate that says Fido is a service animal. I'm sure there will be those who state the dog alerts to low or high blood sugar etc. I don't believe this is going to do much, but it's a start.

A few cruises ago there was a woman who had her Fifi in a baby carriage, dressed to the nines including sun glasses. She wheeled the dog all over, had people pet the dog etc. She had the baby carriage at the end of the table in the dining room and she fed the dog from her plate with her fork and she ate from the plate and fork.

She then claimed, when asked by a passenger, (not me) that the dog alerted her husband when his blood sugar was low/high. The problem was Fifi was never with the husband, only with the wife. I don't think the new regs are going to stop this, but I can hope it will. I do know that dogs can alert to blood sugar, but this was just a bunch of malarkey!

Does this apply to all emotional support animals or just the ones who appear in the dining room sans formal dress?

Since anyone can go online and pay a few bucks to get a phony “certificate” to lie about the dog, this will be hard to enforce. This problem is not limited to cruises. I suppose these people have never heard of Karma.
Is there a site for verification of certificates?

Good news, but will still see a few for while: “Effective immediately, emotional support animals may not sail onboard our ships, as they are not recognized by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).All Emotional Support Animals noted on reservations prior to July 30, 2018 are protected and will be allowed to sail. A notation advising of a protected emotional support animal will be placed on the reservation by the Access Department.”

I don’t know the answer to that question. I know people that have paid for he certificate and the Vest for their dog though, and they claim that the dog is a service animal. So I guess the form looks official enough.

Will some still try to fake it? Without a doubt.

But this puts them on notice and gives staff more tools to push back. It should give them more BACKBONE to push back.

From what the Chief posts, it seems the only thing the cruise line can ask is the nature of the service the dog performs. I also believe service dogs must either be on the floor or in someone's lap. So the stroller dog would not likely be a service dog.

A service dog must be on a lease, lead or harness... according to Royal’s page.

Emotional support animals is like suggested dress codes. The interpretation is based on what the person wants. All pets are emotional support in one way or the other. Unless they are a full time working dog, and have the proper credentials than it should be banned.

I'm attached to my gold fish, but I'm afraid of taking with me because of sharks in the water.
