Knee Scooter Questions

Hello All.

I am taking my Mother on a European Cruise in a couple weeks. I broke my foot and now I am in a boot. I have a knee scooter but I think I will be purchasing an offroad version to help me navigate the cobblestone streets of Europe on my many excursions.

My question is this. Since I have requested Wheelchair assistance with the airlines, can I check this knee scooter as check baggage? Will it cost anything? Also, There is no bag or box for it. Do I just hand them the scooter and pray they don't damage the item?

We are cruising out of MonteCarlo. So it will be a 3 hop flight.

Thanks in Advance!

Wouldn't you prefer to have it taken as your enter the plane, or perhaps use it to get to your seat?

They'll either find a place for it onboard (depending upon its size and whether there are other assistance aids such as wheelchairs taken on) or they'll gate check it and have it waiting for you as soon as you land.

I would *not* check something like that as "regular baggage".

But -->> check with the airline.

I am assuming that you will be totally NWB. Wheelchair assistance to the plane gets you just that, to the plane (unless you are physically unable to walk). You will still need to be able to get to your seat. I, personally, would rather use the knee scooter to get to my seat than to have them put me in the wheelchair that they use on the plane. They can then take the knee scooter and gate check it for you.

If I use the knee scooter to get to the plane:

1) Is there a way to go through a special entrance through security? Sometimes the TSA lines are really curvy and this scooter is pretty hard to turn all those curves.

2) What about our overhead on board luggage? Since I will be knee scooting to the plane, my Mother can't roll both bags. Will a skycap help and then escort us through security?

Thanks, I was thinking it would be easier and more expeditious to get wheel chair assistance. I can hop to my seat. My only concern is damage to the scooter if I get it checked luggage.

Given what you describe/expect as "difficulties" getting to the plane, I'd recommend getting wheelchair assistance. They almost always avoid those twists and turns at security lines.

But KEEP your knee-scooter with you, and handled it as already suggested.

Why ever would you risk checking it as regular baggage?

There's not only the risk of damage, but also of it getting lost.

Get wheelchair assistance (I would), then use your knee scooter to get from the plane door to your seat (if you need to). The flight attendant will then take it from you and either store it in the cabin (depending on the model of plane you are in) or get it to the ground crew to be gate checked. It will then be waiting for you when you arrive. I would not check it as baggage.

Regarding the bags, the wheelchair pushers at the airports are experienced at handling both a wheelchair and assisting with luggage. I wouldn't be concerned about the bags. Wheelchair assistance will take you through the wheelchair line at security.
