NCL Mastercard. Who has it? What do you think?

I noticed yesterday that the forum doesn't have the "search" button now for some reason (or maybe I'm missing it?). So I thought I would just ask.

I decided to go ahead and get the NCL Mastercard since we do cruise mainly with NCL.

Who has this card and what are your thoughts? I know they have a ton of options for cashing in points according to the website, but would like to hear your best advice for use to rack up the points and what you use them for.

The hubby uses my Amex card to run most of his company charges and it's usually $20k and over a month depending on the month. I'm thinking I could rack up some serious points if we switched over to using the NCL card.

Looking for that free cruise in my future. :D

We've got the car and like it. We cruise every year on NCL and cash our points in for OBC. Sure, there are other points/rewards cards out there better than this one, but it works great for us. I run all of my business expenses through it so the points add up fast.

I have the card as well as several other points cards. I liked the NCL card better when they had some casino redemption items. Now I only charge NCL purchases or online shopping thru the world points mall. I have other cards that have bonus points for gas purchases, grocery stores and restaurants. I do like that the NCL cards lets you redeem points for cash at the 1% rate once you hit 25000 points.

It's only a 1% card. There are many, many others out there that are a better option. For instance, if wanting a card for travel, Barclays is 2.2% http://www.barclaycardarrival.com/

The no annual fee version accrues 1 point per dollar charged, and 2 points per dollar charged for travel and dining. Taking the 10% rebate into consideration, when redeemed for credits against travel purchases, you would get 1.1% back for general purchases and 2.2% back for travel and dining.

The annual fee version comes with a $89 annual fee, but you get 2 points per every dollar charged, which when redeemed for credits against travel purchases (and taking into consideration the 10% rebate), would get you 2.2% back.

There are too many 1% cards to mention. Then, there are several cards that have 5% options that rotate.

Bottom line, after you get your initial bonus for meeting spend, there are better options.

Does anyone remember when NCL card gave 3%? I would say about 8-10 years ago they changed it to 1%

We have the NCL Mastercard but have since switched to a AAA Visa card through Bank of America. We get 2X's the points on gas, groceries, prescriptions & 3X's the points on anything travel related including rental cars, theme park passes, hotels, airfare, etc and also for cruising. All other purchases made get 1X's the point for every dollar. There is no cap limit on how many bonus points you can earn either. :)

Last month we took a 2 day CTN on the Breakaway and booked it through Travelocity and did indeed get our 3X's the points for that booking. I was fearful that it would be for travel plans made through AAA only but that wasn't the case at all. We even got the 3X's the points through NCL for our onboard purchases.

Bottom line, I feel that the NCL Mastercard was good for the bonus points but after that it didn't offer anything of value for us.

The redemption process/points for cash back is also the same as the NCL card.

I thought about it until I saw its a Bank of America card. Then I said no thanks. My wife had a lot of problems with BofA and she would kill me if I got one of their cards.

I decided on an airline miles card instead.

Thanks for all of the replies.

My Amex is a travel card (I have the Blue Sky) and that's what we have been using for all purchases on travel to get the most of our $$. For every 7500 you get $100 back on travel. Everything else is just 1%. But they only give you a certain amount of time that the travel charges stay on there to use for cash back. (3 months). When we went on our December cruise, we had a lot of travel expenses, but some of them fell off before we could use them. :(

Another thing I thought about was since the other cards just give you a statement credit and this NCL card would actually go toward the cruise itself, it would be easier to pay for a cruise or earn a free cruise. When we get $$ back off the statement, it's just paying off the bill. It's kinda like seeing a reward at the end of it all (or that was my thinking at least).

I don't know if it is new or it has always been there, but at the very top of the forum page inside the cruise critic banner is a search field with a small magnifying glass symbol next to it.

Yea, I tried that. It doesn't really let you search which forum you want to search in. It's a "general" search and didn't return many post for me. Those that I did see were old.

I hate that they have taken away the search button on the forum part. :(

I love my Capital one Venture card. Gets 2% back towards any travel related purchase. I'm planning to pay my on board charges with my capital one card then pay the bill with points.

There is a annual fee, but it was comparable to similar cards.

I use my NCL card to pay for my kids' college tuition ($$) so major points. I also use the world mall (is that the right name?) for the specials (3x-6x points/dollar etc.) for things I would buy anyway. I pay the balance and rack up the points.

I have used the points for a bunch of OBC on a BA cruise last summer with a sailing party of 5 and am now building them up again for a Gem cruise this coming summer. There are probably cards out there that have different/better benefits, but converting my points to OBC with NCL was so seamless last summer, I'll stick with the card until a time comes when I might choose to try a different cruise line. Not sure when that will happen as I have NCL cruises booked in 2014 and 2015! And I will have college tuition to pay for 5 more years!!:)

I've been happy with the card....but that's just me.

I got mine a while ago and love it. I got 10,000 points for simply getting it, which was $100 OBC. I earned another $100 OBC, and plan to use it for all my expenses on board since I'll get double points. Even if I never go on another NCL cruise and decide to ditch the card, it was worth it for me to get the $200 OBC based on purchases I would have made anyways.

Can someone tell me how to get the OBC with the NCL card? How long before the cruise I need to call them to get it? I cannot seem to find anything on their website that explains this. Thank you in advance for your responses.

You want to log into the rewards site https://www.managerewardsonline.bankofamerica.com/RWDapp/ns/home?mc=mwprwd

Once you log in there is a picture of a ship that says "Norwegians get rewards". That will take you to all of the NCL rewards.

I plan on using the cross (or double cross) meta upgrade depending on what my comp will be from CAS and then upgrade for free.

We have one and ended up getting 200 off the cruise and 100 OBC in only a year so I'm pretty happy with that. I was a little disappointed that when I asked for the casino chips they said that it is no longer available  Oh well OBC is still great :)

Mitsugirly, if you charge that much..I'm sure you could rack up tons more points and it is really easily to apply the points..good luck!

I use the no annual fee version paying 1.25 % back on all charges toward any travel related purchases. I tend to redeem often but if I had saved all my points for the year and a half I've had the card, I could have paid with points for a short cruise by now.

tymike...I was surprised to read that you pay your children's college tuition with your card. I have 2 in college, and would love to rack up the cruise points, but both colleges charge a fee (I believe it is 5%) to accept tuition payment by credit card. No way will I give them any more money than I have to!

I recently converted my 25,000+ pts to cash back and it took 3 days to appear in my bank account. I used the cash option as I'd heard reports awhile ago of obc which became lost. This problem may have been corrected since than but as I had accrued enough points it was easier for me to do the cash back. For less than 25,000 pts. purchasing obc is the better option. I would make hard copies of any obc purchasing transaction in case a problem occurs.
