Hi-first time visitors to Newark/NYC. Want to spend one or two days before cruise to visit sights in NYC. Need recommendations (best rate, quickest, safest) to get from hotels in Newark area to NYC area (Uber, train, etc). Thanks for your help

Could you provide more details? Exact date you need a hotel? Number of people? Bed size requirements? Hotel budget? Driving or flying? Sightseeing objectives in NYC?

The overall best strategy is to stay in downtown Newark near Newark Penn Station to get less expensive transportation ($5.25 instead of $13 pp each way to midtown Manhattan and $2.75 instead of $11.25 pp each way to downtown Manhattan) and to spend about 1/2 hour traveling each way instead of 1+ hours. Newark Penn Station Hilton is the best choice if it fits your budget, but there are other options, particularly if you have a car.

If you have a couple days then I'd stay in Manhattan not Newark. That way you can just take the subway or walk wherever you want to go and you will have some place to stop in to and rest during the day or drop off any stuff you buy. (plus the ability to have a bathroom nearby). If you are only going to have 1 day and only want to visit the WTC area then I guess Newark (and PATH train) is a good option. But to really experience NYC (especially Time Square at night) you really should stay in the city. Especially if you have never been and experienced it before.

PATH is definitely the easiest. You can get it at the Newark Penn Station, Jersey City, or Hoboken. Be sure you get on the one to the WTC as it also goes to 33rd St. After you visit the memorial you can then take the subway to wherever else you are going in the city. The PATH and subways are both safe though, as with anywhere, be aware and don't keep valuables in easy to access pockets.

As far as staying in the city vs. NJ. there are pros and cons to both. You can get more for your money in NJ and there are some nice hotels in Jersey City and Hoboken. It is easy to get into the city from both of them via PATH or NJ Transit or ferry. If you can find a good deal and can stay in the city it is wonderful. Having worked there for many years I try to avoid Times Square, though it is one of those places that is cool to see at night at least once. Just don't eat there as it is mostly WAY overpriced chain restaurants and there are so many other amazing places. I hope you have a wonderful trip!
