Reduces Service Charge (or OBC) if no Room Steward Service all week?

Recommended Posts

Interesting concept. I might take advantage of it, but they would have to pay me a heck of a lot more than $60.

But it's kinda a mute point because Mrs. Dawg would never go for it in a million years. They could offer a free cruise, just clean your own cabin, and she's turn it down.

I wouldn't go with no service for any amount of credit. At home I use a clean towel every day for my shower. I change my hand towel in the bathroom every day at least once. I certainly wouldn't change those habits to save a few bucks.

I am neat in my cabin and I could make my own bed, but I want the trash emptied and the towels changed after my shower. I always take a shower before dinner and there are times I take 2 showers a day on a cruise.

I'm the one who does the cleaning and laundry etc. at home and when on vacation, I don't want to have to do any of that.

no, no, no

agree, agree, agree. A cruise is suppose to be a vacation from housework.

And if you think the lines at Guest Services are bad now-- imagine standing on line for soap, towels and sheets. An interesting way to increase profit for the cruise lines - $1.00 for a wash cloth....

Ditto for me ... at home I use my towels more than once, but never in a hotel or on a cruise. For a two-night stay in a hotel I am okay with no service (other than clean towels) but that's my limit ...

We frequently rent timeshares and there is one mid-week refresh. I always do Make a Green Choice at Starwoods for the points if solo but never with my wife. I don't mind either of these, but I can't see it working on a cruise ship. Just not enough space. Timeshares have garbage/recyclables rooms on each floor, but your average timeshare has like 10 or 12 units per floor, not 350. The amount of staff and effort to maintain the experience for 3,000 to 5,000 guests, plus another 1,500 or whatever crew, is nothing at all like a land hotel. If a significant number we're doing it on a ship I think it would be mayhem.

No way I would go for that. Not on a cruise and not in a Hotel.

It´s not really a new thing in the Hotel industry. I´m quite opposed to it, especially after the Vegas shooting where the guy had prepared his room for several days not being disturbed, as he just refused to let housekeeping in. So besides the cleaning there could be some security issue here.

We were at a Disney Resort last month. At check in they asked if we would like a $60 gift card redeemable at any store or restaurant in the parks if we gave up the daily maid service. We could call House Keeping any time for additional towels, special requests, etc, for no charge, but otherwise no daily maid service.

We went for it.

Never saw the maid once all week, our room was undisturbed all week.

Grabbed some extra towels from the pool area one afternoon.

Spent the $60 gift card on dinner one night.

Left a $10 bill when we left the last morning for the maid that would clean the room in a couple of hours.

Would you take the credit if RCL offered something similar?

How much would it need to be?

Point of info: if you book your Disneyland vacation via everyone's favorite big box store, the deal almost always includes, at the very least, a similar $50-$100 gift card. AND you still get daily housekeeping, which keeps the room in much better shape over the course of 100+ different guests/families over a year.

If I wanted a vacation where I made the bed, picked up and folded the towels, and took care of our dirty dishes, I would get a RV or just stay home.

LOL!! Exactly this. ^ ;p

I have an RV. When we take a cruise, the DH calls that a "real vacation".

Exactly. Las Vegas Casino magnate Steve Wynn said the shooting was more unlikely to occur at his hotels because security staff have the right to enter a room that has a do not disturb sign out two days in a row. I could see that policy becoming the norm, especially if MGM gets hit with lawsuits.

I am probably one of the few that really enjoys coming back to my cabin and seeing a cute little towel animal or the bed or hanging from the ceiling....wouldn't trade that for a small pittance of food (or OBC) credit.

You are not alone and so far it seems to me the majority would not take the offer on a cruise.

We were given the same offer when checking into the Rio Hotel in Las Vegas in September. Were going to be there for 5 nights and I think they offered $45 voucher for the restaurants. Couldn’t say no fast enough. :)

Totally agree. I am on vacation and want everything taken care of. And I want to help keep the room stewards employed. So I would say no.

Gee, I guess I was raised wrong. Going forward, I'm going to make the biggest mess in my cabin and demand service three times a day, making the steward work for his money. After all I AM on vacation.

Well...if that is how you want to live in your cabin...go for it. :o;p

Me, I like to keep things neat and tidy, items out of the way in drawers, make the bed (not as professional as our beloved cabin attendant does) and I don't leave dirty dishes or clothes all over.

I DO like coming back to the cabin to fresh towels, clean shower, replaced toiletries, new cruise compass, notes/invitations, fresh refilled ice in the bucket, clean and replaced wine glasses, and yes.....a towel animal several times during the week.

We also love the interaction with our cabin attendant, who is always there to help when they can.

I prepay my tips, but always give extra in cash according to the level of service we receive.
