Procedure on MSC to turn OBC into cash

Will be on MSC for the first time in January on the Seaside, staying in an inside YC cabin. We received 400.00 in OBC from MSC since we booked it back in March of 2015. Since we will probably only use a portion of it on gratuities and minor purchases, I was wondering how to turn the 150.00 or so left over into cash. Is there a way to do it through the casino? Thanks for your help.

You could certainly get it through the slots in the casino. Just register your cruisecard in one of the machines, request an amount to be charged to your onboard account; when the machine shows the amount has been transferred to it, press the payout button. The machine will issue a ticket in the amount which you can then take to the cashier for payment in cash.

Thanks Bea. I had read this was possible on other lines, but I thought I read that a 3% fee was involved. This is a much better option that having to use it on an overpriced shore excursion that I can get cheaper on my own, such as Stingray City in Grand Cayman.

Since it is related I thought I would ask here as OP mentioned it. I have looked through several threads about the MSC provided OBC and using it for the daily service charge. Several posters said it was possible, some said not. When I asked the question directly to a well respected PVC that I booked with she told me no, that just as on most other lines the OBC given by MSC is non-refundable and cannot be used against the daily service charges. Anyone here with experience specifically using the MSC provided OBC for daily charged gratuities?

You definitely can use OBC for the daily charges. OBC is added to your account at the beginning of the cruise and shows up on the credit column of your account. The daily service charge is added each day to the debit column. At the end of the cruise, both columns are totalled and one is subtracted from the other, leaving either a minus or a plus balance.

Exactly! The daily service charge is treated as an expense that is applied to the outstanding credit.

So, does MSC have any OBC labeled as non-refundable? I did not use that term when I inquired about my OBC, just whether it could be used for the daily service charge. My PVC answered back saying it was "non-refundable" OBC and that I could not. I have seen this terminology on NCL where non-refundable OBC cannot be used for the DSC, perhaps she is a past NCL employee. I know very often PVC's can be a bad source of information, but it took a bit of searching to find this one who was highly recommended and seems very knowledgeable.

Thank you for this thread.

I have a little over $500 OBC for February.

We are in YC, so have drinks, I am Black status so have two restaurants and YC restaurant.

Perhaps we may add another restaurant, not sure. My excursions are booked independently and I have prepaid my grats.

So, how exactly do I do this at the casino?

Can I just go up to the window and ask for the cash and ask them to charge to my card?

If not, I just ask if they can put $500 on my card for gambling and go to a slot and then

put my card in the machine and cash out? I'm asking since my dh is not traveling with us and he always goes to the casino. It's just my mom and me and we never set foot in there when we travel.

Thanks so much!

So, Bea, what did you find out on the Orchestra last month?

Hi ............... I couldn't find this thread to report back, so thanks for 'bumping' it! :D I had posted how I got on in my Orchestra review but wasn't sure if you'd see it there.

Just for you, I deliberately didn't register a credit card at embarkation, so the only credit on my account was the €100 OBC that we had. I went to the casino on the first evening, registered my cruisecard in one of the machines and requested that €100 be transferred. When the machine showed the amount, I then cashed out, brought the voucher to the cashier, who exchanged it for €100 in cash. If I had as much OBC as you, I may not have done it in one go, just in case.

(I registered my credit card the following day).

Hi.

Thank you very much for coming back on this thread.

I will have a credit card on file, will I still be able to do this procedure to get most of my OBC cashed out (almost $500).

Do I go to a slot machine, put my card in and put on $250 (for instance) and then don't hit play and cash out?

Thank you.

Yes! It's very easy to register your cruisecard in the machines. You input a 4 digit pin number after using your birthdate to confirm that the cruisecard belongs to you (the casino staff will assist you with this, should you have any problems, but it's quite straightforward). Once done, you just need the pin number every time you want to have an amount charged to your onboard account. As soon as the machine registers that the amount has been transferred, you can just press "Cash Out". The machine will print a voucher in the amount, which you then bring to the cashier to exchange for cash.

Thank you SO SO much and then when I hit the amount to be transferred, it first comes from my OBC, is this correct? If so, I think I got it straight now LOL Thanks!

MSC doesn't separate out OBC from any other payments. The OBC shows on the credit side and any expenses, charges, etc, show on the debit side. So any casino charges will just show in the right-hand column while the OBC will show on the left. Everything is totalled out at the end of the cruise and one is subtracted from the other, leaving either a credit or debit balance.
