MSC Divina Upgrade to YC

Hi everyone,

I was offered an upgrade to the YC for $700 for my November 25th sailing on the Divina which, after careful consideration, I gladly accepted. I called MSC and paid for the upgrade, and they sent me my ticket reissue. While the e-ticket mentions the "upsell50", all of the other information is still the same as pre-upgrade (same stateroom, still saying fantastica balcony). So for those of you who have been upgraded, is this normal? How long did it take for for your documents to actually reflect the upgrade?

Thank you so much! I am very excited, just want to make sure I have all my ducks in a row and don't need to start pestering the MSC call line.

I'd call to confirm. There is a post for someone on Seaside who got similar only to find out a glitch.

Back in 2015, I accepted an upsell from a Fantastica balcony to the YC, and got all the anemnities with the YC. The sai card we received at boarding had YC all over it, and never had a problem getting drinks, which, at that time, were only free in the YC, and the cabin fridge. Now the drinks are ship wide.

You received all the amenities because you paid for the upgrade (as the OP has done, too).

Apparently, if MSC arbitrarily upgrades you, you don't - you remain on the 'Experience' that you originally booked. It seems that you can't even access the Top Sail Lounge and are assigned a table in the MDR in that case.

Thanks for all of the replies! I ended up calling and was told that they were in the process of assigning a new cabin but if there was no change by this morning to call back. I checked this morning and we are good to go. I upgraded from a fantastica balcony and like Bea said because we paid for the upgrade we do get all of the benefits of the yacht club experience.

Delighted to hear everything's sorted. Only one week to go before you're being escorted onboard like a VIP. Hope you enjoy your YC cruise - I'm sure it'll be terrific! :)

Are you sure about this? It sounds insane that someone shall have a cabin within the YC but no access to the lounge or restaurant. Can that really be correct?

I absolutely don't question your knowledge about MSC but this really doesn't sound right!

That's what was reported here, SC, by someone who claimed to have been upgraded. It absolutely sounded insane!

However, I was discussing MSC with a TA a while back who told me that one of her customers had been upgraded from an inside cabin to YC. It would be extremely unfair on those who paid YC prices if someone got all the perks without paying for them. Also, if you get upgraded to an Aurea 'Experience' cabin, you don't get Aurea benefits, so why would it be any different when being upgraded to YC.

Time to move to Azamara or Oceania where everyone has a "yacht club" experience.

That can't be right. Once you go through the card controlled doors to get in the YC, there is no restrictions on where you go. Top Sail lounge, upper pool area are all available.

A better question is why msc would give a free upgrade to YC when they could get someone in some cabin on the ship to pay for the upgrade.

It can be very easily done. The person receiving the free upgrade can be informed that they won't have access to the YC areas. I'm sure no-one would embarrass themselves by trying it on and being refused service in the Top Sail Lounge.

On Fantasia class ships, you're escorted by a butler to the YC restaurant on your first visit. That's to ensure that the m'D isn't seen to check YC guests' entrance because he hasn't met them yet. The presence of the butler indicates that they are, indeed, entitled to dine there. Anyone upgraded (for free) to YC would not get past the m'D.

Also, the 'Experience' that you book and pay for is indicated on your cruisecard, regardless of the 'Experience' level you're upgraded to. So someone upgraded to YC would only have their booked 'Experience' indicated and not 'YC' - hence the crew in YC would know not to serve them.

Like Oceania but not the newer ships. Their configuration is not pleasing. Never been on azamara. Our favorite is crystal!

Sorry but I don't believe msc would ever put someone in a YC cabin and then deny them the YC amenities. The butlers are the room stewards as well, so are you saying they would have someone else come to clean because their experience doesn't include butlers? I think this discussion is theoretical. I don't believe msc has ever done this to anyone. Awkward for everyone involved.

Butlers are assisted by room stewards so it's possible that those upgraded to a YC cabin would only have the steward tend the room.

There have been reports on here about receiving an upgrade to YC, coupled with a local TA stating that a customer was upgraded from an inside cabin. I don't believe that in these incidences that people were able to enjoy the upgraded 'Experience' when MSC won't even extend the benefits to those upgraded from a Fantastica balcony cabin to an Aurea one for a lower price difference.

I highly doubt they could prevent an 'upgraded' passenger from using the Top Sail lounge or any other area within the Yacht Club. Perhaps they could assign the passenger to the main dining room, but prohibiting access to the other areas would be near impossible.

You would have to take the time to inform all staff members to ignore a certain passenger/s. Not in the interest of MSC. Perhaps they should be made to wear a scarlet letter!:p The only upgrade that would work would be the suites outside the Yacht Club and then you could program their cards not to work within YC.

I think that this is the answer.

If upgraded to a YC cabin located outside the YC = no access.

If upgraded to a YC cabin located within the YC = access.

Can anyone confirm that they have been upgraded to a cabin located within the YC and not received access to lounge and restaurant?

I have no experience with Azamara but I do have with Oceania. The Oceania experience is also dependent on which cabin class you book. Not all cabins get butler, not all cabins get unlimited premium beverages (all get non-alcoholic beverages though), not all cabins have priority booking restaurants and so on...

I agree that the experience is not that different as it is if you compare it to MSC tiers (huge difference from Bella to YC!) and the service and quality is top notch across the ship on Oceania.

I really enjoyed Oceania and would no doubt sail with them again if the price is right and we don’t take the kids with us. Keep in mind that Oceania prices are consistently higher than those in the YC.

I wonder why MSC make these upgrades and why upgrade from balcony to YC, rather than balcony to suite and suite to YC?

Whatever their reason it can certainly benefit them in the long term. I once had a problem with a booking on Virgin Atlantic and took it up with the Customer Service Desk in London. Without asking I was given an immediate upgrade from economy to Upper Class and was hooked. Since then I have always booked Premium Economy when crossing the Atlantic. Sadly, Upper or First Class are well outside the budget!

Now then MSC, are you listening? I'm booked on Divina in a Bella balcony on 25 February. Any chance of an upgrade to YC please, pretty please with a cherry on top?

Sometimes you hit the jackpot, as I recently did. Originally booked in a Bella aft balcony (gotta love those aft balconies!) I was offered and accepted an upsell to the YC, cabin assigned on deck 16. My question is the following: what is the protocol for ordering drinks outside the YC? Do I just show my key card? Is it that simple? All replies welcome. Thanks...
