Getting to Old San Juan

We are going to be in Old San Juan in June. We decided not to do an excursion, but to just explore on our own. Anyone know if you can walk there from the port or do we need to find transportation? If we do, any suggestions?

If you dock at the Pan American pier you cannot walk to OSJ. Lots of taxi's at the pier. If you are at the Old San Juan pier you are right in the thick of the area.

Been to SJ 5 times and only once saw a ship at PanAm pier. We have always docked at San Juan pier. When you exit the pier you are in OSJ! If you are healthy, you can walk to both forts and all around town.

Ships only embark/disembark at PanAm pier, all ports of call stops are at the Old San Juan pier. Even for RCI and Celebrity.

Most of the time, only weekends are when ships start/stop cruises in San Juan.

As others stated, you'll be docked right at OSJ. We were there 3/13 and OSJ is in pretty good shape with the exception of Paseo de la Princesa and Paseo del Morro being closed due to heavy wave damage a few weeks ago. The area is easily walkable, this coming from a 63 yr old with HBP who had knee surgery on 12/20/17. We just hiked up the hill to the cathedral then after a couple of refreshing adult beverages at El Convento it was all downhill back to the ship. Oh yeah, the trolleys are working if you don't care to walk.
