Embarkation with Dogs in NYC

We are taking the QM2 Eastbound on May 17.

My plan is to drop the wife off with our two small (25lb) Labradoodles and luggage at the Brooklyn terminal, and then I will drop the rental car off at Avis which is located at 201 State St and is only a mile or so from the terminal

I'll then take a taxi (or hopefully Avis will give me a ride) back to the terminal.

Having never been there - does that sound like a sensible plan? Is there somewhere safe that she can wait with luggage and dogs for me to return?

Anybody who has done this before with dogs... and thoughts or suggestions that you can share?

Thanks

Greg

We haven't done this with pets, but it sounds like it should be fine. I would recommend that you not join the lines and rush at noon, but wait until the crowds die down after 2:00 or so. I recall seeing limited seating in the entry lobby and many others in the check-in area behind (make sure your wife and pets have necessary docs to pass through security to wait inside). Make sure you have your labels on your checked luggage and you can drop it off with the porters first and check-in with wife and doodles upon your return.

Alternately, drop off the bags and travel with spouse and pets to Avis.

I just want to say that I'm jealous of your dogs. They will be pampered. The dogs waiting to board were fawned over by staff and passengers. They will be the stars of the journey.

Well I found a blog post of someone who did the trip with dogs and it looks like we will check in early at 11am not 12 noon. Then it looks like we wait to noon to board, but then are escorted promptly at noon up to the kennels (with a stop for photo shoot at the lobby staircase)

I think leaving them at the terminal will be fine since the luggage will be taken right away and Kate will have the other pet owners there. When the time gets closer and I get my etickets and instructions I will contact the Kennel Master if I still have any questions.

Thanks!

I have taken dogs with me four times in the QM2. First the luggage will be taken by the porters the near instant you arrive. Be careful to keep the dog papers with you! As for waiting while you return, it will not be a problem. There is a waiting area just inside the terminal before the entrance to the security area. The dogs will attract a lot of attention! They start boarding the dogs around noon so judge your drop off accordingly. It can take a bit of time to go through security, having the dog papers checked, your own checkin and then bringing the dogs to the kennels. It all works very efficiently!!!!
