Panama cruising, can we join our own excursions?

Hi,

This will be my first time cruising to panama and on the itinerary it said cruising partial transit...does that mean we can't get off the ship. Or we can only do excursions with the ship? I thought we can get off the ship and learn about the making of the canal?

Thanks for any info.

On partial transits, when in Gatun Lake, you may only get off on ship's excursions. You may not get off the ship in Gatun Lake on your own. Discussed here frequently.

After dropping people off at the Marina in Gatun Lake, the ship will go back through the Gatun Locks, and dock. Whether or not the ship offers tours there varies by cruise line. You can get off the ship, but there is little in the immediate area, and usually not time to go very far.

Thank you! I'm also reading up on this and thank you for clarifying. I guess we won't be able to learn or see the history of the panama canal unless we take a excursion with the ship.

I can only speak for Princess. Multiple enrichment sessions on multiple days enroute to the canal. Each presentation was about a different aspect of the canal, canal building, Caribbean cultures and life.
