Golden Princess - Vancouver to Whittier Alaska

We are back from an amazing Alaskan adventure and I’ve finally finished my notes. This will be a pretty lengthy review. Please chime in with any questions.

In March 2016 I was at a fundraiser with two of my friends when the idea of taking an Alaskan cruise with our husbands and friends was floated around. I remember saying, “well if you two want to go, then I want to go too” - even though I hate the cold! And that’s where it started. After doing some extensive research and reading over that summer to ensure we knew what we wanted, my friend and I met with a travel agent in the Fall of 2016; we let her know we have a group of approximately 20 people and we would like to take a cruise to Alaska. We knew we wanted to cruise out of Vancouver, because we didn’t want to waste an Alaskan port on Victoria (we are taking the cruise to go to Alaska) and we knew we wanted Glacier Bay. We also knew it had to be after the 4th of July, but, before mid August when all our kids head back to college as this was an adults only trip.

Our travel agent came back with a few options and we selected the Golden Princess Northbound out of Vancouver, due to its itinerary and week of travel. In January 2017 we all started booking, and in the end we had 26 people traveling as a group. My parents joined the group, my friend’s sister and best friend, and a whole bunch of friends and their families. Our only stipulation was that none of our kids would be cruising with us.

So this trip has been talked about and has been in the planning phase for quite a while. We’ve had two cruise parties so everyone could meet. We are a core group of friends, but, from there other family and friends tacked on who did not know each other. We had a cruise party in March, with cruise games and icebreakers, and had another one in June - 4 weeks out. It was great to get to know each other and discuss what everyone was doing in ports and travel arrangements.

We set up the group so that everyone would cruise together, and we would all have dinner at 6pm, but, other than that everyone could do there own thing to get there and do their own excursions, etc....

Day 1 - Thursday, July 26, 2018

We, DH, me, and my parents (early 70’s) were up at 3am for a 6am flight out of BDL (Hartford, CT). Another couple from our group also was on our flight. We flew Delta - BDL to ATL, then with just an hour layover, boarded a plane to Vancouver. Some friends left a day early to head to Seattle to visit with family there, and some were leaving on Friday. Our friends who were leaving later on Thursday (same day as us), six of them, on United, had issues with their flight and had to rebook on Air Canada and after more issues, due to a storm, didn’t show up until early Friday morning.

We landed in Vancouver at approximately 12:30pm and then had a long wait at the airport to get through customs. I have never seen such disorganization at an airport. After we went through customs we rushed over to baggage claim to find our luggage, which now had the next flight luggage already coming out. Found our luggage and then we headed over to meet our driver. I had pre-booked a SuperShuttle, who I’ve used before, to get us to our hotel. We also said goodbye to the other couple since they were staying at a different hotel than us and needed a taxi. At this point, I was VERY hungry and anxious to settle in and find food. We made it to the hotel, The St. Regis, within 20 minutes and checked in. Only one of our two rooms was ready, so we put all of our luggage in my room and headed out to dinner. We ate lunch at the Keg Room which was perfect - cocktails and burgers and my dad had his first salmon. By the time we were done with lunch/dinner my parent's room was ready and we got them all set.

My parents decided to stay in for the night so we headed out to tour Vancouver and walked towards the cruise port, Canada Place. We met up with our friends who were on our flight and staying at the Blue Horizon, for drinks at the Tap and Barrel while a symphony orchestra warmed up for a show at 7pm. What a beautiful location. We enjoyed our seats by the water, watching the seaplanes, and winding down from our long flights. We called it a night right around 6pm - being up since 3am with a 3 hour time change was catching up with us.

Day 2 - Friday, July 27, 2018

So I was awake at 3am and tossed and turned from that point on. The time change was catching up with me and I usually wake up at 5:30 am EST, so, my body was still on EST. I caved at 4:30am and called our son back home - 7:30 am his time - just to check in. Our hotel, the St. Regis, had free breakfast in their downstairs restaurant area, so, we met up with parents at 7am and went down. WOW! What a breakfast! It was a sit down free breakfast with made to order eggs, bacon, pancakes, etc… I am Gluten Free (GF) and Dairy Free (DF) and they were able to accommodate me with GF bread and almond milk. After breakfast we purchased our Hop On Hop Off trolley tickets at the Concierge desk and then headed down to Canada Place to catch the trolley for the Park Route - we were on the first trolley of the day at approximately 8:30am. I was a bit skeptical about using the trolley after reading many reviews lately of the trolleys’ being full, but, we tried anyway and never had a problem finding a seat.

I’ll skip the specifics, but, we spent the day in Stanley Park and then rode by trolley over to GasTown for a late lunch and then shopped a bit. We then headed back to the hotel to rest and get ready for dinner. Also during this time my DH and I went on a search for two bottles of wine for the cruise and didn’t have to look too far for a well-stocked package store.

For dinner, we (us and my parents) walked down to the Cactus Club Cafe and met up with 3 other couples who were staying at the Blue Horizon. I had tried a month ago to make a large group reservation, but, they had no space, so...my parents, husband, and I got a table for 4 and my friends got a table to 6 in the bar - but ended up being a squished bar table of 8 as another couple arrived. We all thought the food and drinks were delicious. We all then hung out in the area, took pictures of the Olympic Cauldron, and then all headed back to our hotels to prepare for our cruise. Since I wasn’t sleeping well, I was exhausted!!

Day 3 - Saturday, July 28, 2018

It’s cruise day!!!! It was kind of a repeat of the day before, although I was actually able to sleep in until 5am!! We met my parents for breakfast at 7am and again had a wonderful, full breakfast. After breakfast we all went back to our rooms to pack and said we’d meet in the lobby by 9:30am to check out and request a shuttle to the cruise port.

The concierge requested a shuttle, but, advised us it’s kind of early to head over. Our shuttle driver arrived a short time later and also advised us that it was kind of early to head over. We went anyway and arrived at the cruise port early (10:15am) and the previous guests were still disembarking - no problem. Our shuttle driver again said we were early. BUT, we pulled into the parking garage off-loading area and were met by happy people willing to take our luggage and there were many others doing the same. No cruise port employee said anything about us being early and we were quickly ushered in to the embarkation process. By 10:45am we were sitting in the embarkation area and were told we would be let on at around 11:30am. By 11:45am we were in our room and then headed to lunch in the buffet.

The rest of the day was spent at the Sailaway party, exploring the ship, fixing an excursion, and having fun with all of our friends!

About the Golden Princess:

This was our 3rd cruise but only the first with Princess - we’ve sailed Carnival the previous two times. We had an obstructed view room - E405 - which was perfect for us! Typically we have a balcony, but, for the price on the Alaskan cruise, we didn’t feel it necessary and since I’m always cold I didn’t think we’d spend much time out there. It ended up being a perfect decision for us.

E405

After reading some less than pleasant reviews about the Princess, I was nervous...but, I saw no leaks and didn’t notice any foul smells.

The ship was clean but worn down. I found the crew was always cleaning, but, saw many areas that needed minor repairs such as chipped molding on steps, cracked tiles, rusted ladders, etc… Again, the crew, they were all AMAZING. Each one of them made me feel welcome and they were always smiling and engaging.

The food was OK, they catered to my GF and DF issues in our sit-down dining area, but, I had a hard time in the buffet. The GF pizza was great on deck 14 and they never had an issue making it for me without cheese.

The entertainment for us was lacking. MY DH and I are in our late 40’s and found the music very dated. The nightclub was always 70’s or 80’s music, which would be fine for a night, but, not EVERY night. One of the bands that played every night played lots of 50’s/60’s music. We had a comedian for two nights - he was hilarious (although I only made one show)! I would have loved a comedian every night like Carnival has.

The fitness center didn’t open until 7am which was an issue since most of our ports were early and we like to work out, shower, eat breakfast and then go. We went on our first sea day and there was a huge line to get on a treadmill or elliptical. From then on we stretched in our tiny room and walked outside on deck 7 and 8 to get everything in.

We picked this ship and cruise line for the itinerary and if we had to do it again we’d do it all the same in a heartbeat.

Thanks for the great review so far. We are doing the same trip next year, but the other way around. And we have the same type of room (on the Port side of the ship.) I guess you could say we are going to be the mirror image!

Can't wait to hear more!

The room was awesome. We had sunlight and could see where we were, the price was right, 2 floors down to dinner, near the middle eleveators, close enough to the front elevators, etc... Just perfect!

Day 4 - Sunday, July 29, 2018

As typical, I woke up early, but, not as early as Vancouver and was actually able to sleep through the night. We had protein shakes in our room for breakfast and were at the gym by 7:30am. It was packed!!!

We then walked around the ship and were outside when the captain called out to the pod of whales off the port side! Amazing!

The rest of the day was spent eating, drinking, and having fun with our friends.

Day 5 - Monday, July 30, 2018 - Ketchikan

Traveling from Canada waters to the waters of Alaska we lost another hour. Unfortunately, I didn’t take into account my cell phone is on Airplane mode and wouldn't automatically adjust. So my alarm went off at 5am and at 5:30am we realized from the TV that it was actually 4:30am!!!

We made do, had shakes, stretched in our room and then packed for the day and started walking the ship.

At 6:30am we realized the gangplanks were down and they were letting people off the ship so we got off and toured Ketchikan in the early mornings when everything was closed and quiet.

We walked up to Creek Street, saw one salmon, walked down to the marina and saw our first eagle, and then went back to Creek Street and saw many more eagles, one flew directly over us and the sound of the swish of his feathers is a sound and moment I’ll always remember with my husband - it actually brought a tear to my eye.

We headed back to the ship around 8:30am so we could catch our 9am excursion, “Eagles, Totems, and Lighthouses” - we were doing this excursion with a few others from our group. I should mention at this time that the weather is absolutely beautiful. No rain and it started in the 60’s and was probably the 70’s by 9am.

The excursion was great, we saw eagles, totems, a lighthouse, whales, sea lions, and a sea otter!!! The scenery was incredible as well. What a great excursion!!

By the time we got back to the cruise port we had time to purchase some souvenirs - and this was by far the best port for souvenirs, so I’m glad I listened to everyone on CruiseCritic suggesting this port for souvenir shopping. And just like that, it was time to get back on the ship - we had a 1:30pm report time. Since it was so hot out we got on the ship and put our bathing suits on and jumped in the aft pool and hot tub for the sailaway. Never in a million years did I imagine I’d be in my bathing suit on an Alaskan cruise - so glad I packed it.

This was our first formal night. One thing about dinner - we had confirmed reservations on our booking for 6pm, but, when we got on the ship it was 5:15pm! It felt kind of early, but, we had no choice. In the end, it worked out because we would have dinner which would take until at least 7pm and then we had time to do other things. With 26 of us, we had 4 tables. On the first night we all ate where we were assigned, for every night thereafter we would all fill a table as we came in, we would be served once everyone was seated. It was kind of nice, we were able to eat with different people from our group every night and twice I was able to eat at the same table as my parents. After our formal night dinner, we all went upstairs and took a formal group picture.

Day 6 - Tuesday, July 31, 2018 - Juneau

Like every morning, we were up early, had our shakes, stretched and got ready to get off the ship. We were off the ship by 8:30am and didn’t have an excursion until 12noon. Since we were off the ship so early, we were first in line for the Tramway up the side of the mountain. What a view up there. We were able to learn a lot about the Tlingit tribe by watching a movie in the theatre and then walking around the different buildings they had.

After we came down the mountain we walked all around Juneau, did some window shopping, watched some seaplanes, and then went to Tracy’s Crab Shack for lunch. OH MY GOODNESS! The food was amazing!!! My husband was drooling the minute we walked by here, and I am not a huge fan of crab - but I really wanted to eat here for him. Thank goodness because the food was amazing. We each got an Alaskan Crab bowl (rice, Coleslaw, and 4oz. Each of Dungeness and snow crab) and my DH also got a huge king crab. Again, the food was amazing and was one of my top meals of the trip!

After lunch, we headed to meet our excursion - Whale Watch and Mendenhall Glacier - with another couple from our group. We loaded the buses, headed to the marina and met up with 2 other buses and boarded our boat. Another couple from our group ended up being on the boat with us - they were on one of the other buses that only signed up for the whale watch. The six of us had a beautiful time. The whales were plentiful and the views were amazing. After this, we boarded our bus and headed to Mendenhall Glacier. We only had an hour here so me and my husband and our friends' speed toured the area and saw the glacier, touched the water, walked the salmon path - but it was closed due to bears. After the glacier we headed back to the ship but our bus driver allowed us to get off in town if we wanted. Us, our friends, and a few other couples got off. Our ship wasn’t scheduled to leave until 8pm with a 730pm report time, so we made use of our port time. We went to the Red Dog Saloon for drinks and appetizers. What a fun place! It’s not authentic to Juneau, but, it does have an original feel. Sawdust on the floor, old-fashioned decorations, and a live banjo player. My DH and friend had a duck fart shot, which it’s known for and they said they were amazing. I was pretty hungry, but, had a Glacier Margarita before my snack came. The drink was great but I should have had something to eat first. The appetizers did come, but, I should have had them before the drink.

Anyways...we headed back to the ship at around 7pm so we could go to dinner. Our dining room was doing “anytime dining” today since we were in port during dining hours. We were told to show up before 8pm and they would seat us. My DH, our friends from our excursion, and another couple from our group we saw on the way, all headed to the dining room. We decided to try and go “as is” in our touring gear, sneakers, backpacks, cameras, and all. We weren’t sure it would work since we saw a few people get turned away from the dining room the day before for wearing shorts and sandals. But, we were allowed in and sat at our usual tables - most of our other friends were already there.

Tonight was our comedian night which I was so excited about, but, I was exhausted. By the time we were done with dinner, it was after 8pm and our ship was getting ready to leave. My DH and I went out to deck 7 to watch the sunset and sail away. We had a bonus of seeing tons and tons of salmon jumping out of the water by the ship. When we first noticed I thought someone threw something off the ship, but, it was just a salmon jumping. Once the sunset and we were on our way...I went to bed and fell right to sleep. My DH went to the comedian with our friends and then came to bed.

Day 7- Skagway

Today was the first day I actually slept passed 5am! But we had an excursion at 7:20am so we got up and had our usual morning routine we’ve settled in on. We were off the ship by 7am and found our tour - I don’t remember the name but it was the train, mining, and a BBQ lunch.

We took a quick bus ride to the train depot and boarded our train car with everyone from our bus. The train ride was breathtaking. Again, we had a beautiful day with no rain, lots of sun, and warm weather. As we climbed higher and higher into the mountains, the scenery got more beautiful and the air smelled more and more fresh. We crossed into Canada and then deboarded onto a bus to take us to our gold mining and BBQ lunch.

The place we did our gold panning and BBQ lunch was not a location I would recommend, but, my DH and I made the best of it and enjoyed the beautiful scenery. They also had an old dredge which was pretty cool to look at and tour around. I was not able to eat much lunch on our excursion due to my GF/DF issues, but, again we made the best of it and knew we could have a snack to eat in town.

After lunch and mining for gold, we headed back to the bus and were dropped off in town. In town, we visited the Red Onion Saloon and had a tour of the Brothel area, did some souvenir shopping, and had a snack/lunch at the Skagway Brewery. My husband and I split the most delicious salmon GF sandwich I’ve ever had in my life and he also had the famous spruce tip beer which he said was delicious. This beer claims to have more Vitamin C than a glass of orange juice. The brewery also carried a GF beer, so, our day was getting even better.

Then the wind came in. The wind was a little chilly so I added a layer back on over my t-shirt and we continued to walk around. We had a late debarkation day today so we were able to just “show up” to dinner again and when we arrived a good amount of our friends were there. After dinner we hung out in our usual spots - Explorers Lounge, The Wheelhouse Lounge (2 for 1 drinks after 10pm) and the promenade bar and lounge where there was always an amazing piano player.

I almost forgot to mention, when we go back on the ship the puppies were on board. They were very cute and you could line up to take pictures with them, but, we didn’t.

Day 8 - August 2, 2018.

It’s Glacier Bay Day!! We wanted to be up on deck early today so we could see everything as we sailed in. So it was our usual morning routine and then up on deck. It was pretty chilly today so I’m happy I brought my hat and gloves, it was a little misty and foggy out, but not too bad. I was on the lookout for whales and we did see a few!!

We met up with my parents and some friends on Deck 14 and enjoyed the view. There were photographers out everywhere taking your pictures with the beautiful view behind you. I took advantage of the photographers and had them take a few pictures when we were in different locations. The crew was also out passing out blankets and had spiked coffee and hot chocolate stations going everywhere.

With the number of people on the ship I was concerned that we wouldn't have a good viewing spot in Glacier Bay, but, the complete opposite was true. I think some people stayed inside while we were in Glacier Bay because I always had a front row seat at the awning and we moved around a LOT! Deck 14, deck 15, and then we headed down to deck 7 and 8 and then we’d rotate again! We were able to see some calving and one time it was so loud it sounded like thunder that kept echoing...so cool. But, you really had to be outside to enjoy the whole experience.

After lunch, my DH and decided to sit inside near a window on deck 7 at the couches and the longer we stayed the more of our friends found us and joined. We were just enjoying the view.

Tonight was another formal night. Dinner was great, we took some more group shots and then went to the Explorers Lounge for some dancing.

I was capturing the mist that was pooling on the railing with the glacier behind it.

Day 9 - August 3, 2018 SEA DAY

Yesterday, at some point, the Captain gave his update and let us know where we were and that we may experience some rocking that evening and this morning. When we were out dancing last night I didn’t really feel it, but some of my friends did; it didn’t bother anyone except our one friend.

BUT, come morning...yuck. At around 4am I woke up to my water bottle going thud onto the ground and then I had to very carefully walk to the bathroom, but I easily went back to sleep.

We wanted to actually eat a normal breakfast today so we went to the MDR at around 7:30am for breakfast and the ship was still rocking and rolling. Again, the MDR catered to my DF GF issues and had soy milk and gluten free bread available. The food was great, but, I did not like the rocking. We headed back to the room and looked up on the TV’s GPS where we were, we were still in the open ocean and were approaching Prince Edward Sound. I had predicted that when we reached PES the rocking would stop and I was correct, but, that wasn’t until around 12/1pm.

At 10am my DH had a haircut appointment in the spa, so, I laid down, which made me feel better, and watched TV. My DH is in the military and has to work on Monday, so, he really needed a haircut prior to getting home sometime on Sunday. He was a bit concerned about getting his haircut with all the rocking, but, they did a GREAT job!

When we entered PES the shipped stopped rocking completely and I felt completely back to normal!

Tonight we were in PES and viewed the College Fjord glaciers. The timing was a bit off for us because we were entering the glacier areas during dinner. No one in our group could enjoy dinner because we were all looking out the window. My DH and I were the first in our group to forgo dessert and coffee to get up on deck. I was kind of bummed about missing dessert because the chefs made me a surprise “GF/DF” dessert each night, but again, when will I ever see this again.

Up on deck was a repeat of our Glacier Bay day. We had such a beautiful time looking at glaciers. As we were exiting College Fjord we met up with friends and enjoyed some drinks while looking at the views. We had to head up to the room prior to 10pm to get our bags out by 10pm, so, we missed out on the final cocktail party. Most of our friends are continuing on to Denali and Fairbanks, so they were able to leave one bag with them, but, we could only keep an overnight bag.

Day 10 -August 4, 2018 Whittier - Disembarkation

Sad to leave our beautiful vacation, but, we still have a very FULL day ahead of us as our flight home doesn’t leave Anchorage until 10pm. We went to the breakfast buffet this morning and ran into some of our friends who are leaving for Denali/Fairbanks and said our final goodbyes. Fourteen of our friends leave on the Denali train today, six friends take the train to Anchorage and then board the train for Denali tomorrow, and us, my parents, and one other couple head home. My niece is getting married over Labor Day weekend (Destination wedding), so, we needed to save vacation time at work for the wedding vacation.

Because our flight is so late, I looked into many options of what to do for the whole day, if I had to do it again, I’d do it differently. I didn’t know or comprehend how many beautiful glaciers I’d have already seen.

We debarked the ship which was super fast and easy and then boarded our bus with our carry on bags to the Portage Glacier tour. Once on the bus, we rearranged our carry-ons and took out our toiletries and my pajamas and condensed to just one carry on. We had a short bus ride over to the Glacier, but, had to first go through the 2-mile tunnel and had a quick tour of Whittier.

Waiting to go through the tunnel.

The glacier tour was nice, but, we had already seen bigger and better, so, at this point, it was just a time filler for us. If we had started in Whittier four our cruise, this might be a good excursion to see what’s to come, but, for us, it was just lackluster. After the visitor’s center and boat tour we went to a little shop/food venue for about a half hour. We purchased some coffee, had a snack, and then boarded the bus for a scenic tour to Anchorage.

When we got to Anchorage we dropped off some folks at the airport and then we continued, only about fifteen minutes, to the Egan Center in downtown Anchorage. At the Egan Center, we dropped off some carry on bags and got a map. Anchorage was so much smaller than I had built it up to be.

We had lunch at the Glacier Brewery, it was good, but, not as good as our lunches in Juneau and Skagway. We then walked over to the Open Market which was a lot of fun. The Open Market had food and local craft vendors with live music. There was such a festival atmosphere.

The last bus from the Egan Center was leaving for the airport at 6pm and we had to get our checked luggage out of the storage area (this is where our bags went we put out Friday night at 10pm) at the airport by 7pm, so, airport here we come. We got our bags and then again had to repack - putting some of our carry-on stuff in our checked bags. Then we checked in for our flight, had dinner, walked around the airport, then boarded and took off to head back home.

Once home I stayed in contact with all of my friends in Denali and Fairbanks. Maybe our next Alaskan adventure will include there.

Well, that's the end of my trip. I hope you enjoyed reading it and got some ideas or tips from it like I have from reading so much prior to my Alaskan adventure. Please feel free to ask me anything! I have a great day.
You gave some nice information about the Golden in post #6. Do you have any final thoughts about the Golden?

We just got back from the same trip! Simply amazing. The weather was so nice for the entire time. For us this was a sleeper cruise. Knew it would be nice but didn’t anticipate how awesome the scenic cruising was and how much we enjoyed it. Loved the golden and would have no qualms about going on her again!
