If NCL offered completely non-smoking cruises, would you book?

Unless YOU are ready to spend the amount of money that the Brinks truck picks up from each ship, except Disney, then you better think about how much the ships have improved the smoking situation.

Really don't have a problem with smokers EXCEPT in the Casino. There should be a section just for the Smokers that keeps all the smoke in that section. Believe it or not secondhand smoke KILLS

All of these forums have complaints about smoking in the casino as smoke gets into the surrounding areas (O'Sheehan's, Artium, Theater). I would like to think that IF people at NCL reads any of the forums, they would eliminate this practice.

This will change. I live in a place with a smoking ban. The casinos have expanded multiple times. Smokers will choose the smoking option but without a smoking option, they will still gamble.

One day, the cruise lines will catch up and ban smoking or create a better way to separate it. I dont mind a smoking area but it can be awful for those of us who do not smoke and live in smoke-free cities.

Happy to go on a non smoking cruise and depending on the amount of the extra would consider paying for the non smoking venue. Next cruise is on Celebrity for the non smoking policy. We would like to do another NCL this summer but all the newer ships do seem to have smoke issues.

Side note....non smokers DO get lung cancer somewhere in the 15 percentage range of all new lung cancers are diagnosed non smokers and the ages get younger and younger. Having just watched my never ever touched a cigarette or any other nicotine products have half a lung removed this fall...it can and does happen.

I haven't seen much evidence that smokers won't gamble in a smoke free casino, whereas I have heard and read loads of comments from non smokers like myself, who won't venture into a casino where smoking is allowed. The smell is ingrained into the furnishings, so even the token smoke free nights are neither pleasant nor inviting.

From my observations on recent cruises, the numbers using the smoking areas are a small minority, but have a disproportionately large impact on the rest of the passengers. Perhaps the time is right for a brave and forward thinking cruise line to 'test the waters' and offer a non smoking cruise on a one off trial basis. From the comments on this thread, it sounds as if there would be plenty of interest. It would also be interesting to see what the casino profits would be like, given that more of us would be able to use that facility.

I suspect that those resist to change are rightly fearful that a smoke free cruise would prove to be very easy to fill, would show no loss of profit, and would have other cost benefits related to reduced cleaning and refurbishment costs, and the reduced risk of future litigation from staff adversely affected by occupational exposure to second hand smoke.

Celebrity's casinos are non-smoking and they don't seem to have an issue getting gamblers.

Celebrity hasn't built a new ship since 2014 and they have sold off their older ships. Celebrity isn't growing.

It's one of the reasons Disney costs more.

I do feel sorry when I see an older pipe smoker, who probably would rather be home, than dragged on a family cruise, and nowhere to go.

I am NOT a smoker. Just giving my opinion that the cruise lines have done a pretty decent job of containing it, by reducing where smokers have ANY rights.

If gambling goes hand in hand with smoking....and if smokers get withdrawal when denied cigarettes...and if gamblers are addicted....then it would stand to reason that a cigarette withdrawing addicted gambler might make some wrong moves and wrong bets at the roulette wheel and the blackjack table....thus increasing the profits for ncl. Lol

I agree that some ladies use too much perfume and gentlemen use too much cologne. But smokers, no matter what they do, stink as well. There is nothing worse than getting into an elevator with a smoker or someone with too much perfume or cologne on.

I'm a gambler and no matter what NCL ship I'm on, the smoke in the casino is awful and I don't cruise on the bigger ships. I would love to see NCL go non-smoking in their casinos and hopefully one day they will.

Maybe gambling and smoking went hand in hand in the olden days, but times have changed, just as the percentage of smokers have declined.

However, I have yet to sail on any ship that provides a smoking area in the casino where said casino wasn't packed to the gills morning, noon and night with gamblers. With the limited real estate on a cruise ship, you won't attract more than the facility will hold. If it's always full, there's no harm, no foul when it comes to maximizing or increasing profits.

Stolidcruiser, you may be right. However, I have heard that there are quite a few smokers who use the casino primarily as an indoor smoking area. I also note that some cruise lines now restrict smoking in the casino to active players only, presumably in an attempt to counter that.

There is also the possibility that non smokers may have more disposable income to fritter in the casino, although maybe we spend our cash on more frequent cruises!

Anyway, whatever the arguments for and against, it would be gratifying if NCL were reading this thread, and would consider experimenting with a non smoking cruise.

I'm sure they would attract a very satisfied and loyal following.

AFAIK, 2nd-hand perfume doesn't lead to thousands of deaths per year...(maybe "old lady" perfume is an exception).

As we all know ..the ncl rules say that only active gamblers can smoke in the casino

However since we know that ncl rarely if ever enforces it's own smoking rules its no wonder the casino becomes a smoking room for non gamblers

I've seen first hand how ncl doesn't enforce their rules when a waiter was serving a couple on the smoke free sun deck all day ....with cigarettes in their hands

This I know because when I struck up a conversation with them later in the day...and the wife lit a cigarette....and I said ..."oh you probably don't realize the sun deck is non smoking " Her response was the waiter has been bringing us drinks all day and didn't say anything

Lo and behold at the same moment while she still had cig in hand the waiter came over asking if they wanted another drink

I brought this up to the beverage manager who was on the pool deck later that day. He apologized of course. Maybe he spoke to the crew. Maybe not

I as a paying pax had to leave the sun deck because someone was smoking there and the waiter continued to serve her.

Totally justified in the removal. And ncl now knows exactly why I did it Which is the real point.

No, simply because smokers create both fire hazards and nasty messes. There should be less work and worry for the crew on a nonsmoking ship, so why pay more?

Also, I should note that there is perfectly adequate technology available for NCL to create clean air spaces even in casinos. According to what I read here, they have chosen not to use it, so we will reduce their cash flow because we cannot tolerate smoke. That seems like a poor business choice on their part, especially considering that we now know some cruise lines DO offer smoke-free space. That's likely where we will book next.

I like the replies. I too hate the smoke so therefore never gamble. I don't like to be anywhere near the smell of smoke. It's harmful to staff first off. I think that NCL could set a new standard. Just like no smoking on airlines or in rental cars or motels!! It needs to happen.

On airplane person spends maximum of 20 hours. It is not the same.

I agree with limiting smoking zones. On Princess now there are two places in the aft, really separated and many smoking free days in casino. No smoking places near pools or other common zones.

Smokers can go to these zones if needed,

Nobody is taking away anyone's right to sail or even mentioned taking away anyone's right to smoke....because there isn't one.

Smokers can always not smoke on sea days and on port days, exit the ship and smoke like a chimney in the designated smoking areas.

Once they get their fix, smokers can return to the ship.
