Kiel Canal

We are sailing this September on Explorer in the Baltic.

Original itinerary showed us using the Kiel Canal. Now it shows us sailing north around Denmark to Amsterdam.

Anyone aware of why they would make this change?

Cheers.

Square Peg- Round Hole situation. The Explorer wouldn't fit under the bridges, is to long and has to much draught.

Another one of those Regent "Ready, Fire Aim" moments (Ill fated RSSC Navigator 2017 North West passage)

Here is what I found on the Web:

Kiel Canal

Maximum length for ships passing the Kiel Canal is 235.50 metres (772.6 ft);

Maximum width of 32.50 metres (106.6 ft)

Maximum draught of up to 7.00 metres (22.97 ft).

Height 42 metres (138 ft)

RSSC Explorer Specs

Length 244 metres (800.5 ft)

Width 31.1 metres (102.03 ft)

Draught 7.1 metres (23.3 ft)

Height 48 metres (157.48 ft)

Maybe Regent had originally planned the voyage using the Navigator as it might fit thru the Kiel Canal.

Of note: Years ago some of the older NCL ships had a funnel that was hinged and would flop over to get under the Kiel bridges.

we are going on Explorer in July and it still shows we are doing it.

I believe we are on same cruise 16 July and I was really looking forward to going thru the canal. Read previous posts about how beautiful it is, with people waving from shore and all the colors.
