Inside cabin

Recommended Posts

We were on Discovery 2 twice last year. Each time we had inside cabins on deck 2 (2053 and 2055) and both were very good - spacious and plenty of storage space. Would very happily stay in them again.

We had inside cabins many times when we started cruising. They are excellent value for money as the cabins themselves are not much smaller and you have access to exactly the same facilities onboard as those who pay much more money. As you asked for the downside I should add that for many people the lack of natural light and fresh air would be a problem. This is the reason other categories sell out first. Personally we only cruise now if balconies are available.

If you do go ahead try to get a higher deck as at least the corridors will get fresh air because most cabins there have balconies. Lower decks have no opening windows/doors and in our experience can smell a bit musty.

May be correct on some decks but on Discovery 2 deck 2 is often used as gangway exit with a wide open exterior door so cabins around those I suggested are certainly not musty.

We've booked inside for this year (an inside plus because of 4 of us) we were alittle worried as our first cruise, but as a friend told us, it gets you out of the cabin more to see the scenery and explore, no light coming through early morning (i have to have it dark to sleep well) and perfect if all you use it for is sleeping and showering/ changing. I can however see advantages of a balcony cabin especially for couples who may want to sit out on the balcony but for us with kids im sure we will off around the ship exploring instead so we are happy to be in an inside cabin.

We have never had an inside cabin but I can recommend that you take an emergency light of some sort as this year on Discovery we had a power outage, early morning for a couple of hours and speaking to some passengers, who were in an inside cabin, they found it very difficult without any lights even opening the door was no good as only the emergency floor strips were on:eek:

We had an inside cabin last week on discovery (2091) and it was lovely. Quiet (slight vibrations from the ship but nothing disruptive!!) Nice and clean and cosy for a small family. Can't fault it. Put view from the bridge on tv at night for light and it was just enough :)

I haven't cruised with Marella (I'm currently browsing this forum to get info on the company/ships!) but we have been in inside cabins for all four of our cruises. We found them absolutely fine - as others have said, it's very dark which meant I slept brilliantly and the air conditioning meant that it was never hot and stuffy. We found the space was well-used and it never felt cramped. We're currently considering a balcony for our next cruise, but I will happily choose an inside again no problem.

We have sailed in inside, outside and balcony cabins and can honestly say that the only noticeable difference is the lack of natural light. For us, the huge difference in price for a cabin which we will only use to sleep and shower in is a no brainer. When we had a balcony cabin, apart from the initial novelty value, we used it very little as much prefer to be out of the cabin either doing stuff or socialising.

When sailing solo, I always have an inside cabin and find them in general to be fine. I prefer to take a plug-in night light with me so that if I need to get up in the middle of the night, I don't have to put any lights on.

I had an inside on Deck 3 on Discovery 2 in January. This is designated as a single cabin but had a double bed. It was spacious for a single but space around the bed in particular would have been tight for two (one side of the bed was against the cabin wall). Storage space was good for 7 nights but might have been a bit tight for two people for 14 nights. Insides on higher decks are probably a bit bigger?

The cabinetry was a bit marked (with scuffs etc) and was dated in style but the bed was comfortable, air-con fine, no musty smells and shower pressure and temperature good & constant. I also found it to be very quiet.

We have had inside cabins a couple of times and they have always been perfectly adequate more so on a busy itinerary because you find that you don’t tend to stay in there that much.If you need blackout conditions to sleep then they are definitely the ones to go for. As someone else said a small torch for the bedside table is a good idea. (I acquired a ballpoint pen with a small l.e.d. Light on the lid and it is perfect for this)

Outside cabins are exactly the same apart from a window or porthole and it is nice to get natural sunlight. (The outside cabin that we were in on the Dream earlier this year didn’t have blackout curtains so the cabin was swathed with light early morning)

Hope this helps.

Hi Campolady, we are on Discovery 2 in a few weeks in cabin 2051, so I was really chuffed to read about your cabins. Do they have any toiletries in case I forget, to tide us over till we can buy some.

Just shower gel and shampoo in the bathroom/shower - was fine for me.

All our cruises at the beginning were insides. Left the bathroom light on but shut the door to leave the tiniest bit of light into the cabin. Usually reasonable size and very affordable compared to balconies. Only once we were situated the lowest deck and the last cabin at the bow - quite noisy and alot of movement, crashing waves etc. We then started using balconies which did cost alot more and once we had, it spoilt us and was hard to go back to an inside thereafter. Now we have retired, we have to cut our cloth and have to consider the cost and can cruise twice as many times for the same money with an inside. We did miss the natural light in the mornings so have now opted for an outside cabin for which our Marella cruise was only £37pp more for 2 weeks. We would still try to get a cabin close to midships as we can.

Looking forward to many more cruises on Marella :)

Many thanks for your info. We are inside deck 2 midships, we always book there for the price, handy for getting off for trips and hardly any movement from the ship. We haven't been on any of the new ships so we are really looking forward to going. The Spirit has always been favourite, sad that she's retiring. Get that next one booked !
