Thanks for the update... We will keep our fingers crossed. But given that this is our first trip to the area I am sure there will still be plenty to do and see.

There are definitely plenty of other things to do & see in Maui. :cool:

 

You might get some showers at Iao because the interior area of the West Maui mountains (Pu'u Kukui) is reported to have the 2nd highest recorded amount of rainfall. That goes into underground aquifers & is the main source of drinking water. At about 350" per year it ranks second to Kauai's Wai'ale'ale at 450".

 

I've read that at one time it was taller than Haleakala (10,000') but erosion from rain has resulted in it now being 5,800'. The erosion from Pu'u Kukui formed the isthmus between these two volcanic mountains to create the Valley Isle.

The Department of Land Natural Resources plans to close ʻĪao Valley State Monument again, this time for two months beginning on Monday, Oct. 16, 2017. Parks officials say the temporary closure is expected to end on Dec. 16 or sooner as crews work to complete Phase 1 stabilization work following a historic flood that occurred on Sept. 13, 2016.
