A couple of months ago I was told by a HAL rep that smoking would be allowed in Casino on the Nieuw Statendam. Has anyone heard anything different? Very surprised and disappointed as this is a brand new ship. Feeling is they could have smoking policy from the start - less work then implementing no smoking policy later on.

I just got off a 14 day cruise on Koningsdam July 22. By my measure, I found no problems with second hand smoke on Koningsdam in the casino. Maybe a brief smell now and then but nothing to spoil the night about. Come to think of it, I noticed less than a handful of smokers the whole cruise in the casino.

Prior to this cruise, I was so afraid my trip would be ruined after reading some of the posts about Koningsdam smoking policy but my fears were set to rest.

On the balcony, I never smelled anything but God's sweet ocean.

I've heard that NCL splits the casino into two non-smoking and smoking rooms. Hopefully, HAL will follow suit?

Was on the same cruise. Sadly, we never got to see the midnight sun "setting" as the clouds obscured the view, but there was a whole lotta daytime! And all the smokers stayed in the smoker's area. I know. Kept a good eye on them ~ ;p

We had an overdose of light for sure. I missed seeing the stars.

I just did my review.

Me, too! My best friend hugged me the night the moon first appeared. :D

I'll go read it. Mine is about half-finished b/c I'm a perfectionist like that.

This was the survey I should have said. Sorry. But I gave them High marks.

This is only fair, they need to consider it. I’m a former smoker and know that it’s not a switch you just “turn off” for 7 days (or longer). While we can hope that eventually no one will smoke, the reality now is very much different.

Today I had a reply from HAL re smoking policy on Nieuw Statendam

"The Nieuw Statendam should have the same smoking policy that the Koningsdam currently has. Smoking on Koningsdam is currently only allowed in designated areas (Seaview Bar/Pool portside only and in designated areas in casino for active slot players. This is subject to change."

Please! Please! Do not demean my husband. We all know he should stop smoking. We are planning a cruise on the Rotterdam in December 2018, and are wondering where on the ship he is allowed to smoke. Thanks very much for you concern and consideration!

Outside starboard aft Sea View pool and occasionally in Casino if actually gambling.

No longer can smoke on cabin balconies.

STOP! People need to smoke and anything you complain about will not detract from that. Give them their nights in the casino (don't go there those nights if you have a problem since they are probably making more money from the smokers) and give them the FEW areas of the ship they can smoke! They are also paying a premium for the SA balcony cabins for which they cannot use to smoke.! STOP STOP COMPLAINING! These are the rules and if you don't like them, sail another cruise line!

Yes, Cruise on Celebrity which is pristine and Non-Smoker friendly. Casino is nonsmoking. It is clean and delightful. I still cruise on HAL from time to time but no HAL casino for me.

People need to smoke ...
It simply isn't true. My spouse hasn't lit a cigarette for over a decade, and quit specifically during a vacation (changing a habit works best when you are out of your normal routine regardless), switching to nicotine gum to address the "need".

If they did not divide the two rooms with a complete wall, it's a joke. Smoke 'drifts', as most of us know.

I gave up smoking (to have a baby) 25 years ago. I know how hard it is to do even with a good reason. However, there are better options to accommodate smokers than having their smoke impacting on non-smokers in the casino. In Australia, many clubs with slots have sheltered outdoor areas for smokers complete with slots as smoking is banned indoors https://tabcorpgaming.com.au/playing-outdoors/

We left HAL ten years ago due to smoke. I am an active casino player but will not play in a casino where smoking us permitted. I have now returned to HAL due to casino NS policy on some ships. Am currently on Zuiderdam and loving it. HAL has upped their game significantly in the areas of entertainment and customer service. Hopefully HAL will ban smoking in all of their ships' casinos at some point.

Looking at the Nieuw Statendam for 2019 but very concerned about the smoking ... usually sail Celebrity where that is not an issue inside the ship ... does the smoke from the casino make it to the entertainment / music venues on the ship ????

Thanks ,

We didn't notice any issue in that regard on Nieuw Amsterdam.

Nieuw Amsterdam is non smoking and has a different configuration than Nieuw Statendam. Nieuw Statendam is configured like Konigsdam which allows casino smoking. HAL has issued conflicting information about whether casino smoking will be allowed in casino on Nieuw Statendam but latest info indicates that it will be allowed. I hope that changes.

May I ask when or how HAL suggested that the N.S. casino might be non-smoking?
