Which lines offer “slow” or “gentle” walkers’ tours?

We cruised last summer on an Emerald Waterways Rhine River cruise that was excellent. It was our first river cruise. They offered the gentle walkers tours as well as walking tours for those who could walk at regular, fast speeds. My husband would like to do another river cruise on a different river and I saw a good price on a Gate 1 river cruise. However, all of their cruises are marked as moderately active. It says there will be tours with 3 to 4 hours of walking every day. The walking tours that we went on with Emerald did not continue for three or four hours. (At least not without sitting done for some Black Forest cake or something, or involving periods where one is seated. With Emerald sometimes when the walking tour was finished I would basically escort my husband back to the ship where he could take a nap or something, and then I would go back into the town and shop or just look around. Oddly enough, the first walking tour was made up of a regular group and a slow group. My husband was in the slow group and his tour finished before my regular one! My group’s guide was long on words and added in almost too much information taking up too much time. His guide was funny and everyone talked about how good he was!

While my husband will occasionally to sit down on a bench or something for a minute or two, there might be days he decides to stay on the ship but other days he would get off in the ports.

Can anyone tell me if Gate 1 river cruise tours are truly more active? Also, are there any other of the mid priced river cruise lines or low-cost cruise lines that are good for people who have a bit of a mobility impairment but can still do some walking, and can handle curbs and a flight or 2 of stairs?

Thanks for any info.!

I do not know if Avalon compares on cost but on our May Moselle, Rhine, Main cruise there was a slower "gentle walkers" group at each stop which several people took advantage of. At one stop which was on both sides of the river, a bus was sent to bring them from one side to the other and then back to the boat again. I have not been on a Gate 1 cruise but on some of their land trips. They could best tell you about their river cruise policies and they are always very responsive.

I am now on Uniworld- River Empress. They do not exactly call it gentle walkers but do accommodate slower walkers and helped me avoid stairs.

Thanks to all of you so much for this information. It’s helpful. I’d really like to get a full report from someone who has has actually cruised with Gate 1 as well. So if someone out there who has sees this, please post!

For the record, I just called Gate 1 and inquired about the River Tours. I was told they did not offer any sort of gentle walking tour. The agent I spoke to was rather rude and didn’t even seem to have a clue that any ship or tour could include gentle walker or slower walker tours. I asked about information given in one section of information in which it is stated one should be prepared for 3 to 4 hours of walking on the river cruise tours. I asked her if this was the duration of most of them and if they included any pauses from time to time. She said they did not pause and that all were usually 3 to 4 hours. I find that a little hard to believe. oh well. I don’t really want to judge all of their reps by the demeanor and attitude of the one I spoke to because I spoke to nice ones before we did a Gate 1 tour of Morocco. Apparently their cruises are budget for a reason!
