Check out Rydges in Exhibition Street or Adina Apartments in Flinders Street (direct with hotel) or the local tourism website Visit Victoria. The City Circle tram is free in the CBD so it is simple to get around.

We stayed at the Mercure Welcome in Little Bourke Street for a short break earlier this year. It's only a 3 star hotel but it was very comfortable and clean, great breakfasts, and location, location, location - right in the heart of the city. It's also linked to The Swanson Grand Mercure which is a 4 star.

Looking for a reasonably priced (US$ 120-150-) hotel in Melbourne CBD for 4 nights in late Feb. - early Mar. Any recommendation would be appreciated. Thanks.

Or the Ibis.

Handy to the Station, short walk into middle of the city.

robcruz,

Would you be interested in an apartment instead of a hotel room? Melbourne CBD has plenty of apartments which have washing machine, dryer and kitchen facilities, ideal for a few days stay and also close to the many restaurants and cafes Melbourne is well known for. I'd suggest you check out some of the hotel booking sites such as Booking.com. I've just had a quick look at this site and there are many apartments in your price range.

If not an apartment, the hotels suggested by other posters are great suggestions. Quite a few hotels appear to be booked out for the end of February already. Most hotels and apartments in the CBD or close by at Docklands and Southbank are close to public transport, cafes, restaurants etc.

Enjoy tour stay in our beautiful city.

Leigh

I would recommend Rydges in Exhibition St too. Close to Chinatown, loads of cheap good restaurants around. Easy to walk anywhere in city, nice and safe. Good, modern hotel. Plenty of transport options around.

I go there regularly, it's a great spot.

How was your stay at Alto on Bourke?

Our stay at the Alto was excellent. We stayed five days then went on a two day-one night tour to see the Great Ocean Road and the Philip Island Penguin Parade and came back to the same hotel for two more nights before departing Melbourne.

The breakfast is excellent, even though a bit extra, you have a choice of excellent continental or special order, cost 16 AU dollars and 19 AU dollars. The room rate we paid was great. Room was spacious enough and the location of the hotel was great. The people at the hotel were super, they helped us when we needed it. We would stay there again, if we went back to Melbourne.

Thank you! This is great to hear! We booked it for 4 nights, then we are flying to Sydney and staying there for 4 nights, then embarking on a cruise! As part of our booking, we get free breakfast at the Alto! We also plan on doing a tour of the great ocean road, but just an all day tour! Any ideas on where to stay in Sydney? We were thinking maybe an airbnb with 2 bed/2 bath for 4 adults, or a hotel, but have not done enough research yet to know where we want to be.

Sydney is expensive. We wanted to stay as close as possible to the Circular Quay where the cruise terminal is located, but most hotels there run about $300 US a night. I found an excellent hotel a few blocks from CQ called The Tank Stream Hotel. It has a great location, with many good restaurants nearby and the price was great. Rooms are a bit smaller than some would like, but we managed pretty well. The hotel is fairly new and modern and people friendly. I think that we paid about $175 per night.

Our TA is suggesting the Somerset on Elizabeth for our 3 night stay. Does anyone have any experience with this one??

Thanks,

Greg

Greg,

No experience with the Somerset on Elizabeth but it is in a handy position to public transport. It has serviced apartments which are great particularly if staying a few days. I'm not too sure about cafes and restaurants close by although it is not too far from Chinatown if you like Asian food, a two block walk along Lonsdale Street. It is about a 20 minute walk along Elizabeth Street through the walkway of Flinders Street to South Bank and its many cafes and restaurants.

Enjoy your time in Melbourne,

Leigh
