We will be in Cozumel in January and want to tour a tequila factory and since HA is the best I have heard about. Can someone help me out about their tours. How much do they cost? Can you take a taxi there and how far is it from where celebrity docks. what do you think the cost of a taxi would be? There will be 4 of us wanting to take the tour.

Thanks for any info.

We stopped there once during an island tour with Gerry, a driver we hired for the day. I don't recall any set tour times, we just went in and the owner/manager gave us a tour. There were a couple of other small groups walking around. It's basically a mockup and pictures of tequila making with tastes of their various styles. But the guide was a real hoot and we enjoyed it. I think BIL bought a bottle but that's not required.

They have a store downtown. I'm not sure what the taxi fare from the International pier where Celebrity docks to the Tequila Museum (HA) along the transversal road would be but since the taxi rates are zoned and set by the local government, I'd guess around 300 peso per taxi each way for up to 4 passengers, plus any waiting charges. Unless they've changed, taxi drivers have used the 10 MXP to US$1 as their exchange rate. The current exchange rate is around 18.5 MXP but I doubt you could get a fare that low if paying in US$. But doesn't hurt to negotiate before entering the taxi.

We have done Hacienda Antigua three times. The first two times i believe it was $10 but I think it was $11 the last time we went. The tour starts out with a 22 oz margarita. We always had a great time although I think we are going to try something different on our upcoming trip.

All three times we just rented a vehicle from Avis (it was around $30-$40 total) and after the tequila tour drove around the island sightseeing on our own (Avis gave us a map and told us some things we should see). It was great. We found a nice beach to stop at for a while as well as a great bar/restaurant. And I didn't mind the driving at all. Once you get out of town (which isn't bad driving) it was great roads with not much traffic.

I haven't done the Hacienda Antigua tour, but I have done the tequila seminar at Mr Sancho's, and it was amazing! It was actually so good that I did it again on the following trip to Cozumel. Here is a clip from my trip report when I review the tequila seminar:

The ladies and I had arranged to do a tequila seminar at Mr Sancho’s, independently from DCL since they didn’t offer it. To get there we needed a taxi, which I’d been told costs $12-$16 each way (accurately). The taxi going there had a broken speedometer, but it was going fast. Very fast. Our driver, Fernando, was native to Cozumel and told us lots of fun things about the island as we rocketed to Mr Sancho’s. When we arrived at Mr Sancho’s I asked for Oliver (the manager who I arranged everything through) and he immediately brought me around to the restaurant. Tables were already setup with a margarita for each of us next to a beautiful display of many bottles of tequila and an actual blue agave plant, which looks kind of like a large aloe plant. A bit of trivia about me is that liquor is sort of my hobby – I’m fascinated with how they make it, where is comes from, what makes it good or bad, etc. That said, this was probably my tenth tequila seminar, give or take, but it was by far the best. Jenn & Sue, who have no real interest beyond how it tastes, were absolutely riveted by Oliver’s descriptions, his presentation on the making and history of tequila, the types, etc. Surprisingly he spoke English perfectly, with just enough accent that you knew it was his second language. We tried two blanco tequilas, two reposados, one anejo, and then were fed a delightful lunch of chips with guacamole, nachos with bean & cheese, beef burritos for the meat eaters, fish tacos for me. After lunch we tried two dessert tequilas, and had the option to purchase any of the kinds we liked. Unfortunately for Sue & Jenn their favorite was $100 a bottle for one of the reposados, but mine was a neat $35 for Crème de tequila. I wish I could remember what the other dessert tequila was called, since it was also excellent, but all I remember is the pretty bottle.

After the seminar was over we lingered a bit over mango margaritas, which had a cayenne pepper rim (a surprisingly nice combo if you can tolerate cayenne pepper). By this time Sue & I were mellow, and Jenn was a bit tanked. Fortunately we had worked out a who-was-in-charge-of-who plan that morning to make sure everybody stayed safe, so Sue got to keep an eye of Jenn. The day had called for rain so we hadn’t planned to stay for the all-inclusive beach package, but it cleared up by the time we were ready to leave.

What’s the difference between Hacienda Antigua and Cava Antigua? And what are the tequila brand names?

Here is some background.

I understand Hacienda is the place (sometimes called Cava Antigua tequila factory Cozumel, as in their Face book page) and Cava Antigua is the brand.

Thanks, but when I went into the Hacienda Antigua/Cava Antigua...the brand that I saw was Regalo de Dios tequila. Is that the same brand as Cava Antigua, just a different bottle? Then I read that Regalo de Dios is being sold in the United States as Number Juan tequila(bottle looks identical). I just don't get all of this.

Not a tequila specialist (prefer other spirits) so couldn't identify one brand against another, but I don't see bottles like that on the Hacienda site.

I do see bottles that look like that in photographs describing the Mi Mexico Linda tequila factory tour.

Hopefully someone will have visited both places and be able to answer your question.

Yes, this is fascinating, because I was just at the Hacienda Antigua last week(also saw the name Cava Antigua while I was there). However, the tequilas that we were offered and sold, said Regalo De Dios, NOT Cava Antigua. However, when I google search, I find Cava Antigua at the same location that I went to. So this makes me wonder if Cava Antigua and Regalo De Dios are just 2 separate tequila brands that are sold at different stores.

We did this tour last year and are doing it again next week. Hoping Casper is still there to do the tour for us! We really enjoyed it, and look forward to taking new folks there to check it out too. (when we were there, we were the only people doing a tour at the time!)

Do not buy anything from this place!!!   We tasted a great aged tequila that was sweet and smooth.  A real sipping tequila.  We bought two bottles at $130US each.  The bottles were already wrapped by them "for our convenience." We we got home the bottles contained cheap rotgut that I wouldn't have touched when I was young.   If you do want to buy anything, get it from off the shelf and open it to make sure it is the real thing.
