Disembarkation Red Hook and travel to LaGuardia

We are taking our first transatlantic this year. On arrival, we will self disembark and then take a taxi to La Guardia to pick up a hire car. Can anyone familiar with the routine advise what time we could reasonably expect to be clear of customs formalities at Red Hook and/or what would be a sensible pick up time for our car hire at La Guardia. Many thanks

The amount of time it'll take to clear seems to be widely variable these days. In the past, it was practically a walk-thru, but it took an hour for us last May.

Debarking time is by cabin assignment. What cabin will you be occupying?

We are on deck 10, but as we are self disembarking, is that also by deck?

We did the self disembarkation at the end of the Christmas cruise in Brooklyn on the 3 rd and we were among the first off the ship at about 7:10 am and we got to our car at about 7:30. This was by far our quickest disembarkation we have had, I'm sure this can vary, so I would budget some extra time just in case customs takes longer.

Enjoy your cruise!

Which trans-Atlantic are you taking?

Just a comment in case you are inclined to price shop: Airport rental car franchises have facility expenses which are passed along to renters in the form of facility fees charged by the day according to where one begins the rental. Often an off-airport location will have lower facility fees so the rental will be significantly less expensive from an off-airport location even though the daily base rate is the same or similar.

Of course, the New York City area is generally a very expensive location from which to rent a car, since urban off-airport locations still have high real estate expenses even without an airport franchise's fees.

As an example, I looked up the cost to rent an intermediate sized car (Toyota Corolla or similar, Group C) from LaGuardia airport and from the Park Slope location in Brooklyn near Red Hook for a one week rental in May. The total cost to rent from LaGuardia is $462.52. Renting in Brooklyn the cost would be $403.50, a savings of almost $60, plus whatever you'd save in a lower cab fare.

Something to consider...

Thanks that’s very helpful. The reason that we are looking at an airport location is that we don’t particularly want to pick up a hire car and then have to drive it through central New York potentially in the rush hour. Our thought was to get a taxi to take us further out, does that seem sensible.

It really depends on where you’re headed with the car- unless you’re headed to Long Island or upstate NY La Guardia might actually be out of your way.

We self disembarked in August. We went down to the tour desk on the day before New York and told them we wanted to disembark the ship unaided with luggage. They gave us a card to show so we could get off the ship early. We were up at 6 and had breakfast in the Kings Court. As walked back to our cabin we saw passengers already lined up with luggage to self disembark. Went back to cabin and got our luggage and joined the line. We were soon off the ship. Very quick thru customs and immigration and out the door to the taxi stand. Lots of taxis. There were black unmarked taxis and yellow taxis. Be sure to ask their price. The yellow taxis were far cheaper. We were in our hotel room by 8:30 in Manhattan. Traffic was light at that time on Saturday morning. We had never self disembarked and did not know how easy it was. No waiting. Just have to wait until the custom/immigration have cleared the ship for disembarkation.

La Guardia wouldn’t be a bad choice then given proximity to the pier- you will pay extra with the additional airport handling fees for rentals that you don’t get at other rental offices of the same company that aren’t at airports.

This is being said without any knowledge of your trip (and assuming you are renting a car to get off the beaten path) but it is far less of a headache if you are headed to Boston to take the train from Penn Station in New York and then rent a car there to get around. Route 95 North to New England is full of traffic and not scenic at all.
