Discovery 2

Recommended Posts

Looking at a cruise on Discovery 2 and have a few questions

Are there fixed dining times or is it all freedom ?

Are there Formal Nights or is it all Casual ?

How does Marella compare to P&O as prices seem pretty similar ?

Have cruised Thomson in the past but not for many years.

It's all freedom dining, no fixed times. Plenty of tables for 2 if required.

No actual formal nights, just dress to impress, one per week as a rule. Quite a few people in DJs but a good mix.

Smart casual is the norm thereafter.

We are long time P&O but have sailed on Discovery 1 & 2 recently and thoroughly enjoyed.

Pricewise - we book junior suite and they are similar to superior de luxe balconies on Azura/Ventura and they seem lower in price than P&O.

The ship is all inclusive and has a good range of reasonable quality drinks.

Gratuities (seemingly the main subject on the P&O forum) are included but obviously some people give extra, the staff are very friendly.

Cost of excursions are a bit lower than P&O generally.

I hope this helps, but purely my own view based on our experience. Others views are available.

Have a look at my post Discovery second time round.

Having previously sailed on Thomson/TUI/Marella cruises 8 times on Dream, Majesty and Spirit we had 3 separate weeks on Discovery 2 last year.

We found Discovery 2 to be far superior to the other ships in every way (except for shops and theatre entertainment). We received first class service in the two Main Dining Restaurants (47 and Gallery 47) and loved Bar 11 for pre and post dinner cocktails. Having really enjoyed the smaller ships in the past we would be reluctant to return to them on future cruises having experienced Discovery 2. We are trying its sister ship Discovery in May for the first time and expect it to be just as good.
