Auckland Itinerary Ideas

I thought CC readers who will be traveling to Auckland might be interested in my latest blog posts. Auckland was the disembarkation port for our cruise that began in Sydney. We spent two days there – one day touring the city on our own and the second on a win tour on Waiheke Island (tour info is in blog post). Waiheke is a short ferry ride from the city and a wonderful way to end – or begin – a cruise!

Thank you so much for sharing your blog! I'm in the process of preparing for a Sydney-Auckland cruise next Feb. My fifth visit to NZ- my first was year-long in HS as an exchange student- I've finally convinced my husband to go! First time for Oz for both of us. The hook for him was the cruise at the start. We'll remain in NZ another two weeks after. You provide a wealth of information for anyone planning or anyone wishing to relive the itinerary. And - you write beautifully. Thank you again. The photos are gorgeous!

Barb, Many thanks for the kind words! I'm so happy to know the blogs were helpful. Both countries are incredibly beautiful, and it will be really special for you to combine a place you know well with somewhere you've never been. Happy planning and happy travels!

Very much enjoyed both posts! thank you for sharing. We will be visiting New Zealand this December (via the Solstice) and are quite excited about the trip. Always lovely to read quality blogs prior to travelling!

With appreciation, Heather

Heather, You are very welcome! I'm so glad you enjoyed the blogs. Have a wonderful time in New Zealand...I completely understand your excitement about your upcoming trip :)

Mary, may I please ask how you got to the RailCruising site from Tauranga Port? did you rent a car, or was it part of a tour? That adventure looked like so much fun! and something different to do other than the typical tours offered for the area.

With kind regards, Heather

Heather, the RailCruising outing was a part of a ship's excursion to Rotorua that also included the geothermal area. You could also rent a car in Tauranga – Rotorua is about an hour's drive – and do it on your own, perhaps combining the day with something else in the area. I would recommend getting reservations on the RailCruising website in advance. You're so right...It was incredibly fun and not your typical tour!

  • 4 months later...

Joy, One day would probably give you enough time to see the key sights in Auckland, especially if you're not planning on taking the ferry to Waiheke or using the city as a base for other day trips. You also might consider booking a half-day or all-day city tour, which would take you to some of the outlying areas and get you to places more quickly than on foot. It's all subjective, of course, but at the very least I would spend one full day and one overnight there. Good luck with your planning!
