High alcohol prices

Thank you for the link, but I don't see anything that should have changed a ship's policy on allowing passengers to bring or purchase a bottle of liquor for use in their cabin. If their feeling was that drunk people are disruptive and might do loud and stupid things, they are correct. But the cruise line had nothing to do with that. Are we to simply prohibit the consumption of any alcohol product because of such an incident MIGHT take place? The logic doesn't work.

I don't know. I am a very moderate drinker, but I do want to be able to have a couple of drinks while on a cruise...in the comfort of my cabin. Seems like that's not asking too much. On our then day 2019 RCI cruise, I will have to be satisfied with my .375 liter of scotch and the two bottles of wine we bring onboard in FLL. I don't want the hassle of bringing scotch filled RunRunners, and we won't be buying any drinks in the bars or at the shows, that's just not "our thing". But I know we probably are in the minority....and RCI knows that, eh?

I don't know all the specifics of the case but that was basically the end of getting in-cabin alcohol

I like to think of it as MY ROOM. Not their room. That's the rub. Royal Caribbean in my bedroom? I think not. But we play the game so we can sail around on a big boat and I play by pretending it is not insanely invasive.

You tipped $5 on $86. Are you kidding me? I was a bartender for 8 years when I was younger and it would be a cold day in hell before I'd come across someone THAT cheap. Just...wow.
Looking at the simplicity of those drinks and the high price, I probably wouldn't have tipped much more than $5 myself.

That would only work if there were no collusion among cruise lines....but they all operate with a blind eye to what others are doing, huh? Just like the gasoline stations in my town. I don't think so! Look at the tips-on-your-invoice that started many years ago - only one line did that, but others jumped on board very soon. However, bad example as that's one program with which I wholeheartedly agree! So I don't think we have as much choice when it comes to things like alcohol and so on, and I DO think there is a certain amount of "conspiracy". Not all of that sharing is bad, mind you, but I still think prices on alcohol in some cases are very high. BTW, management often charges a different price not "to be nice", but to entice customers. That's a tenet of the free enterprise system also...but what do I know; I was a psychology major in college!:o

There's no conspiracy. I doubt the cruise collude about drink packages. They aren't keeping the crews autotips. But if you feel better believing all these absurd conspiracy theories, go for it.

Yes, the cruise lines likely check the prices on their competition. But drink prices aren't anywhere near equal, nor are alcohol policies. You can find drink menus on each cruise line board if you want. Check out Holland America. Their average drink price is about $8.95. We did a HAL cruise last July. We had the drink package. It limits you to 15 drinks a day, ANY kind of drink. Alcoholic, coffee, bottled water, soda. Each counts as "one" drink. Not so on Royal Caribbean. Unlimited drinks of any kind up to about $14. If over $14 you pay the EXTRA. The Drink Package works on Coco Cay or Labadee. On HAL the max drink price on the package is $9. It is limited (as I said) to 15 drinks per day, if you order a more expensive drink, you pay FULL price for the drink. The package cannot be used on their Private Island.

So much for your "talk to each other" conspiracy.

By the way, price fixing (collusion on pricing) is a violation of the Anti Trust laws in the U.S. So if your gas stations are colluding, they stand in violation and can be sued and fined. You should file the report about the stations in your town. They will be fined heavily for violation of the Anti Trust laws.

Being from the Philadelphia area, we always felt RCL drink prices were reasonable compared to going out at home, but the past couple of years we've noticed the prices have risen to a level that is even with going out in our area.

And someone brought up a good point about the drink packages, it would only be worth it for us if we never left the ship/skipped all ports.

I'll ignore the rest of your comments, but who said anything about the cruise line keeping the tips we pay on our ship board account? Not me, and I don't recall seeing that anywhere else......

Drink prices are WAY over our local bar prices! They are more along the lines of drinks at sporting venues, rather than bars or most restaurants. Outrageous pricing. It's one thing when you're at a football game for 3 hours but an entirely different thing when you're a "captive audience" on a ship for a week!

Most of our prices run in the $3-4 for beer, and about $4-7 for mixed drinks.

CB, when was the last time you went out for a drink where you live. Those prices are ridiculously low unless as another poster suggested you drink at the local Elks club!. Cruise ship prices are pretty much the same as what we pay here in suburban Boston. Besides, when you are on vacation, it is OK to splurge a little!

We live in Myrtle Beach, and they have Happy Hour 7 days a week -- most places 4-7pm. If I pay more than $2 - $2.50 for a Bud Light or $3 - $4 for a craft beer, I'm going to the wrong place. It's not our fault you live in high priced Boston with no Happy Hour at all.

Most beers on Freedom last month were beginning at $6.95 + 18%.

So what. That just muddies the waters of discussion.

Local bar in Indianapolis.

Bud Draft 2.00

You call it mixed, including top shelf. $4.00

Texas Roadhouse

27 oz Sam Adams Seasonal $5.50

Local Mexican Restaurant

Top Shelf 27 oz Margarita, rocks no salt. $9.95 (butt kicker of a drink BTW)

I don't know how the local pub or Texas Roadhouse prices are relevant. Try Vegas - $18 to $25 per drink - plus tip. Try any resort - higher than RC. I think RC prices, except for some by the glass wine, are reasonable. At home, there is a place that does 2 shots and 2 beers for $5. But 500 yards away is a resort and one shot is $12. (but yes we too drink for free during happy hour)

People hear those prices, cringe, and immediately purchase the ultra expensive drink package to cover themselves without even looking to see if it saves them anything (especially port days).

They wouldn't offer the packages if it didn't make them more money over per-drink charges.

Yes. I live in DC suburbs and I pay $18 for a dirty martini -- and I ask for Tito's as opposed to Goose. Will the martinis on the Oasis be $18? I'll be onboard this Sunday and this is my last shot at purchasing that deluxe drink pkg before we board. I am Diamond but I rarely enter the Diamond lounges or equivalent. I'm usually travelling with folks who are not Diamond. Thanks in advance.

I spend (and typically lose) at the casino enough to get free drinks

and I tip the servers generously each time they deliver my refreshments. I expect that if I stayed away from the casino, I would spend ( and likely drink) less but I enjoy the table games and I must also take the cost of the cruise (free!) into my calculations. So I choose to cruise, drink and gamble. My happy hour runs during the casino open times and I hope the Diamond folks enjoy theirs as much.

;)

Just a note. I don't think that any ship is $14. They are $12 or $13. (may be $14 in Australia where gratuities are included, but that's a unique situation)

As Diamond, you are allowed 3 drinks per person in almost any venue. Limited menu, but it works

Flaunting would be saying that beer and wine is free almost 12 hours a day on Oasis class. 😉 😁

Aren't you Diamond?

Yes, but I'm currently not on a cruise. :( I'm paying for my Happy Hours until February.
