zitsky Posted July 2, 2018 #1 Share Posted July 2, 2018 Just recently NCL experienced a delay caused by man overboard. Ship was delayed and some people will miss flights and have to reschedule. Would most trip coverage cover this situation? Yes I need to check with the company and I will. Just wondering who has run into this, not just person overboard or another delay and did your trip insurance cover it? I am looking at Allianz insurance. klfrodo Posted July 2, 2018 #2 Share Posted July 2, 2018 Good question. I can't wait to see the exact answer. I would think some of the unanswered questions here would be 1. Trip delay - how long is your "delay" coverage? 4 hrs, 12 hrs, 18 hrs. 2. Does your coverage even include your air travel portion? maybe you only purchased coverage for the cruise 3. I would also think the insurance company would look at flights times. i.e. The cruiseline recommends flights after 1PM and you chose an 11AM flight. I went to the FAQ section of http://www.tripinsurancestore.com but didn't see this detail covered.
Ashland Posted July 18, 2018 #3 Share Posted July 18, 2018 Would that possibly be under Trip Interruption ? And would it really matter what time the cruiseline suggested departure flights...you possibly didn't book your air with them. Agree a good question for Steve at The Trip Insurance Store ;) Always book our travel insurance with Steve and insure everything...no reason not to. zitsky Posted July 18, 2018 Author #4 Share Posted July 18, 2018 Company who quoted an Allianz policy said it would not be covered. Just a problem with immediate family.
Rare GeezerCouple Posted July 18, 2018 #5 Share Posted July 18, 2018 Company who quoted an Allianz policy said it would not be covered. Just a problem with immediate family. I doubt the question was phrased correctly then. Take the scenario one step further... suppose foul play is suspected and local authorities at next port make the ship stay an extra day for investigation. The ship returns a day late. Or perhaps, this happens the last evening, and the ship remains extra long searching the area, and returns at 9 pm instead of early in the morning... That's not covered by trip insurance because the person who "started the problem" isn't a family member? Really? GC

I am no expert, but insurance only covers what is in the terms and conditions. It's possible there ARE plans that cover that. Just not the one I'm looking at. iuki Posted July 18, 2018 #7 Share Posted July 18, 2018 IMO, I would take the insurance company to small claims court if the terms and conditions are ambiguous. Any delay or interruption beyond your control should be covered unless the exception is specified.

Did your insurance cover this accident and the delay? If so, what insurance did you have?

Bo1953 Posted July 19, 2018 #11 Share Posted July 19, 2018 Not helpful. Sorry. No need to be sorry, as you asked the question several times rephrased without any real clarification as to the reason. Also, not sure the reason you would not call a cruise travel insurance specialist with such a specific question as this. As such, there is no way that anyone here, for the most part, can be helpful and answer your question as the odds of someone on the board encountering 'your specific scenario' is very very very slim and you do not understand or accept that.. bon voyage

They say it's not a covered event. It is helpful to ask people who have actually been in this situation.
cherylandtk Posted July 20, 2018 #13 Share Posted July 20, 2018 (edited) OK, now I became curious, so I looked at the Allianz Onetrip Premier (their top plan) and found that trip delay coverage has a limit of 6 hours and includes common carrier delay as a covered reason. A cruise is considered a common carrier, so the reason for the cruise ship delay should be irrelevant. Also, the delay appears to be longer than the stated 6 hour time limit, so I cannot see why the phone rep said it was not covered unless they misunderstood the facts or the facts were not presented this way. As noted in one of the first answers, the only real answer to this question comes from the adjuster after a specific claim is filed. There are other policies out there with shorter time limits for delay. (FWIW, the Allianz policy also has missed connection coverage, but the missed connection covered reasons do not include common carrier delay and the policy limits are quite low).
