Baltimore Cruise Departure

We will be flying in from Denver the day before our cruise. There are a lot of airports in the area, DC, Philadelphia, etc. Tell me your stories of where you flew into and how you got to port. I love horror stories. ;)

Go...

DC airport is probably Washington National which is about an hour or so from cruise port.

Philadelphia could be an hour to and hour and half from the port.

Baltimore is less than a half hour from cruise port

Many hotels at BWI airport have a shuttle to the port or you can just use Uber

Avoid hassles, fly into BWI. Close, convenient. Arundel Mills shopping center is nearby for something to do if you arrive the day before, including a casino. Close to downtown Baltimore to take in some sights.

Dulles (IAD) is a long ways away, and if you arrive in the afternoon, the traffic to get to Baltimore or near BWI to spend the night is HORRENDOUS. I live north of Baltimore, and fly in and out of Dulles for work a lot (better international connections). It can take well over 3 hours for me to get home, and 2.5 hours of that is getting to near the port.

DCA is Reagan National and is pretty much in the middle of the DC area. Also traffic issues much of the day.

PHL (Philly) does not have the traffic issues, but is a 1.5 hour drive or so. And unless you rent a car, the fare will be VERY expensive.

Ok related question. We are flying into BWI the day before our cruise and we have an airport hotel booked. What is the best way to get to the cruise port? It's me and my 3 kids and we will have 4 large suitcases with us. So I'm concerned about us fitting in a regular taxi.

Should I take the hotel shuttle back to the airport and then use royals shuttle? Or are there any shuttles that will pick you up at your hotel? Or any other ideas?

Oh and does anyone know the cost of royals shuttle?

You should inquire if the hotel has a shuttle to the cruise port as many do. Some charge some do not.

The other option that you may want to consider is Uber or Lyft which could be less expensive if you have to pay for shuttle.

Thanks. I will look into a shuttle from the hotel.

I don't think uber of lyft would work for us. Like I said it's 4 of us and we will have 4 large suitcases (3 kids, stuff for 10 nights and no laundry, lol). They aren't likely to fit in a normal car trunk. They could, but I don't want to really take the chance.

Uber has XL vehicles. When you go to order on the app, it gives the choice. These are larger vehicles with more luggage space.

I don't recall if Lyft has the same.

You can also try Super Shuttle or one of the others. They typically go to the airport, but for a group they may take you to the cruise terminal.

We have a short flight to Balt from NY...The nicer hotels are pricey, and seem not that close to the port...we would only stay over, not interested in sighseeing there.

Thinking of just flying same day and using Royal tranfers from BWI to port..has anyone done this day of cruise? Price for 2?

You must love pain and suffering to consider any airport other than BWI. Traffic from the DC airports would make you wish you took the good advice already offered by others.:o WHY would you even think about PHL unless you are getting some super fare <$100 RT (highly unlikely) and then have to pay to get to Baltimore and back????.

We are taking Amtrak from CT to Baltimore the day before our January cruise. We never travel day of if it is more than an hour or so away.

Have you considered taking the train - so much quicker (all in) than flying - unless you are somewhere not served by Amtrak?

Ok, horror story it is. Frankly we love road trips and love drive as needed. BWI is the choice unless we get a super great fare.

VERY TRUE.

I have to fly in and out of Dulles due to international travel, a LOT. It can be 2-3 hours plus in heavy traffic to get to where the port is.

And Reagan National can be worse.

Does anyone know the cost per day to park at the cruise port?

$15 per NIGHT.

So 9 night cruise is $135.

Tip - if you have cash, you will get in and parked quicker. There are two lines, one for cash or credit, one for cash only. Cash line is much shorter and faster.

I think they want exact change.

Amtrak is a good option.

And I would consider going to the BWI station instead of Baltimore.

Platform is the same level as the street, and mostly highway between station and port.

Choice of hotels near Baltimore is much greater if spending the night, also Baltimore is much closer to cruise port than is BWI. I do not think street level platform is over-riding factor.
