Dauntless Posted June 5, 2018 #1 Share Posted June 5, 2018 I am relatively new to cruising but it seems like I was unclear the impression that up grades are up grades, kind of being let into the club by the "door guy" or being reassigned to a better seat once you board the plane. Some get them and some don't, for whatever the reason. Once money gets involved it seems to be an 'up sell' and not an 'upgrade'. People that spend enough money at casinos get free rooms--while not blatant it's the same principle. This 'free' room is not offered to people off the street. So to be clear, most of the upgrades I read about here are really up sales. Kind of like the wolf in sheep's clothing. It's my misunderstanding but I just want to know what is meant by what I read. That wasn't the point. I can see being happy about the situation but it is something that comes with an extra cost. That's what I was trying to find out. trinicruisegyal Posted June 5, 2018 #4 Share Posted June 5, 2018 I’ve read about both upgrades and up-sells on the Viking boards...of late there seem to be a number of posts about up-sells, with Viking offering folks a higher category cabin at some cost in the week(s) before sailing. Posters tend to use the term upgrade to cover both, but that’s an issue not only on the Viking boards. Sent from my iPhone using Forums
stretchcruz Posted June 5, 2018 #5 Share Posted June 5, 2018 I think I've read about some folks who booked a guarantee cabin getting a true upgrade. Some from DV to PV even. Guarantees have not been available on the cruises that I've booked...and they are sold out so I'll be happy with my DV!! (V wasn't available or I would have done that!!) vnb2003 Posted June 5, 2018 #6 Share Posted June 5, 2018 Yes, streatchcruz, I noticed this too. The best upgrades get guarantee DV or even V. They could jump to PV and a very good location. Not always but I read quite a few posts. I'm very glad they got what the hoped for. We booked PV3 and while we talked with TA, the only available PV3 were guarantee cabins. Those (PV3) won't be upgraded to suite, at least I've never read about this happening. We got a modest upgrade to PV1. I did talk about this with TellUs folks. There is an upgrade on Viking besides guarantee cabins and it depends on how many cruises you've done with Viking, you have very special occasion and your TA let them know, etc. They were honest saying that it's hard to say/predict what is the good reason for Viking to grant someone an upgrade. suspaul Posted June 10, 2018 #7 Share Posted June 10, 2018 Guess we haven’t done enough cruises with Viking for an upgrade, 9 river and 3rd ocean in September 🤣! Hey, at least we’re able to go, right? Sent from my iPad using Forums
Rare Host Jazzbeau Posted June 10, 2018 #8 Share Posted June 10, 2018 Not sure why this makes such a difference, but different folks prefer different strokes... On our last Azamara cruise I had booked the basic suite (CC) and when I noticed that lots of folks on the roll call were getting upgraded from verandas to CCs [@ $398 through Azamara's pre-registration process] I called to find out if I could pay to 'upgrade' to a higher suite. The answer was yes – I had to pay for it, but the extra charge was significantly less than the delta to have booked an Owner's Suite (CW) directly. Was it an 'upgrade' or an 'upsell' – since I initiated it? Bottom line: the best cabin we have ever had, at a price that felt quite reasonable. If Viking offered something similar, I would jump on it. Call it what you want.

I assume AZ free upgrade was due to status on Celebrity and AZ. It was a very nice gesture. I have also paid top dollar to be in an Owners Suite with Oceania with initial booking.
