That's a lot of ships!

Recommended Posts

We will be in Venice in 4 days. Don’t miss it. Europe is always crowded. It’s part of the deal. The ports can handle it. You must get off. The ship is not the destination.

This trip our ‘cruise’ is the Dalmatian coast. Dubrovnik to Split on a 30 person boat. Where we can jump off the aft deck into the sea. Huge change for us.

The ports are our destination on the cruise. The vision is one of the oldest and smallest in royals fleet but my father choose this ship over the symphony as its smaller and is doing the 12 night cruise. No water slides or fancy stuff like that but every day we will be off the ship and in port.

Still trying to workout what to do in Venice. I am thinking the glass and lace islands on the first afternoon and the palace the next morning.

That sounds wonderful, Pushka. That coast is supposed to be very beautiful. I was amazed how crystal clear the water was at Dubrovnik, even in the Old Port, so it would be wonderful to swim in.

Have a great cruise.

Yes, I’m very ready to jump in here:

We had originally booked on Celebrity Connie out of Venice and down the Adriatic but the cabins were pretty much sold out ages ago. The Connie will be berthed in Dubrovnik when we are there.

That looks amazing! I've added it to my bucket list.

If you want a great restaurant to go to in Dubrovnik, try the Restaurant Dubrovnik. It's tucked away in a quiet lane. The restaurant is upstairs on a gorgeous terrace. The food is amazing, especially the salt-crust cooked scampi. We found it by accident and had a very indulgent lunch there. Modern cuisine with local twists.

Perfect. We are in Dubrovnik for 2 nights.

The cost for the 7 night trip was $5000 ish and which includes tours in every port. Only one dinner as you are in the port every night. The opposite of normal cruising in fact. You depart mid to late morning each day. Guess there is not that far to travel.

Don’t think you can go wrong with Murano Island (glass) and Burano Island (lace) we did private tours there some years ago - we were travelling through Italy before the cruising addiction - and bought beautiful glass and lace.

Be strong though, you think they hard sell on board ships .... Europeans are specialists at pressure selling to us tourists. 🧐[emoji848]

Just remind yourself you have to get that glass safely back home. We do like Venice, a lot.

Pushka, they posted my Burano glass home for me - just sayin ....... or only buy a single robust piece, they’ll wrap it for travel. Very helpful once you spent $$ [emoji6]

Just a thought on crowded ports....if you are doing your own thing ,ie if the attractions are within walking distance as many are in the Med , just pay it by ear and wing it a little.

eg , when we were in Cadiz the HOHO bus left from the port gates and they were selling tickets inside the wharf. When we got outside ,the line stretched for ages with everyone clambering to get on the bus. We did our walk through the old town first and then when we got back to the port gates late morning , there was no line and an empty bus was waiting for customers.

Good advice.

When in Venice we had to queue for a very long time to go into the church. Hubby had a very small backpack, no bigger than 30 cm we use it for our maps, water bottles etc an in those days camera. When we got to the entrance about an hour later, they refused to let him in with the day pack insisting he had to go and put it is a storage area around the side of the building and then go to the back of the long queue.

He refused so he never did get to go in to see the church. His biggest issue was the fact the sign regarding taking packs in was at the entrance to the building not down where the queue started.

In Venice you can also get a day ticket to go on the vaporetta including murano and burano. It might be something William would like just getting on and off, similar to having an all day ticket for the sydney ferries.
