Keeping cool in tropical climates

Does anyone have recommendations for the best cooling neck scarf, the kind you get wet and snap to engage? Or any other keep cool tips would be appreciated.

Any sporting goods store will have those "towels"...hubby has several he uses for golf. Really doesn't matter which brand...they all work pretty much the same!

The only tips I can offer are the ones that are well known.

> Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water. Not alcohol.

> Wear lightweight clothing.

>If you're susceptible to heat, pace yourself. Keep your activities at a moderate level.

And there is one other trick that works. Run cold water over the back sides of your wrists (same side as your palms). It doesn't have to be ice water. Cold tap water works just fine.

Wear a hat all the time.

I also carry a small foldable ribbed fan with me -- sometimes it just helps to feel a breeze, even if self-created!

Techno-fabrics can be good as long as they feel comfortable on.

If you're in the sun, wear sunscreen on all exposed skin. Nothing makes you feel hot like a sunburn....

When I need to wear long sleeves and pants in a tropical climate due to the danger of malaria or dengue, I wear 100% linen or cotton, no other fibers included, not even 5%. The silk I bought in Vietnam also works well. All clothing loose! A sun hat! Sandals in which I can actually walk.

Most native people who live in the hottest places on earth wear natural, breathable fabrics like you mentioned.

I don't wear polyester for several reasons, one of which is how it holds odor, even after laundering. Also, some polyester contains triclosan, a suspected carcinogen.
