Ways to remember where you have been

I have got a job starting on a cruise ship in august and was thinking of buying something such as a t-sirt or mug from every country i have been to to say i have been here. Does anybody else do this and has anybody got any ideas on what i should collect. Obviously it will have to be something small like a mug but im not sure on what i should collect and was hoping you guys could throw up a few ideas thanks

Decorative bottle openers are another idea. They come in all sizes, shapes and decors.

Magnets for us, too. They're cheap, easy to bring home, and I can have them on display so I can see them every day.

I get my dad a shot glass from each place I go. I try to find a unique one. They're small and would be easy to display as a collection.

For foreign countries, I also save some coin, bills and stamps. At one point, I had sandwiched them under a piece of glass for a tabletop.

Christmas ornaments are always nice and small. It makers it fun to unpack the ornaments during the holidays, looking at all the places you have visited.

My wife and I collect pins from all the places we've been to. I build frames out of wood and cork to display them in. Each one has the shape of the theme of pins in it.

For example, I have one that looks like a totem pole for the pins from our Alaska trip. I made an elephant frame for the zoos and aquariums, a pair of dice for the Vegas casinos, etc. I finally have enough pins to make a cruise ship frame!

We like pins because they are small, cheap, and look nice displayed.

We collect magnets - the frig is covered, but there is more room for more vacations. My husband also collects shot glasses, and we always, always, always buy christmas ornaments. It's fun to take out the box, and remember all of our trips together. Eventually though, we will need 2 trees every year!

One thing we've tried to do is to buy a small guide book - usually a cheap one. When we're old and decrepit (OK, older and more decrepit), and can't travel as much as now, if we've forgotten where we've been, we can at least reread the books.

We too collect magnets. If that's not your thing how about postcards or pins?

We collect magnets also!!! We are so lucky that our front door is made out of metal as well as our heater. We can't wait till we add to our collection from our Mexican Riviera cruise in January 2005!

I collect sand from each island's beach we visit. I bring along zip lock plastic bags, identify where the sand came from and then when I get home put the sand in glass bottles identified with the location. They make nice coversation pieces. And, remind me of where I often would rather be!

John, I forgot to say, Congratulations on your job! Which line will you be working for and which ports will you be visiting?

Magnets, postcards and shotglasses work for me. They are inexpensive and small to carry. Sometimes, t-shirts too.

We have a friend that buys a pin at each place they have visited and places them on a hat that he wears from time to time. You can tell he travels alot and it is a good conversation piece!

Christmas ornaments are the best. Each year when you decorate your tree, it's a day of reminicsing. Just be sure to mark each ornament with the year and place. Ornaments can be marked by a small tag attached to the hanger or by writing directly on the ornament.

John, you might want to check the roll calls listing the cruise lines. Use "find" and type in Fantasy. That should pull up questions regarding that ship. Also go into the reviews on the Home page.

Working on a cruise line is a tough job. We all appreciate the hard work cruise line employees do! What will be your assignment?

I collect those little clear plastic things, with blue water inside and stuff that floats on the blue water.

I dunno what their called, but they come in the form of magnets, key chains, bottle openers, paper weights... etc..

As long as they have that blue water inside.

Another vote for magnets, but you could also make sure you get a picture of yourself in ach port at a welcome sign or at a recognized landmark. I used to always get t-shirts but on my last trip I opted for pottery and things like that. As a crew member I would think you would have to be concerned about space nad breakage.
