Staten Island Hotel

Recommended Posts

Good day everyone.

I thought I would ask here first, since there are quite a few who are very knowledgeable about this area.

This is totally NOT a cruise related question.

We are driving from Ontario Canada to spend the weekend in NYC. We are bringing another couple who have never been.

Since this won't be our only time we do this, but our first with them, we thought we would do the Staten Island Ferry into the city.

So, we would like to stay near the Ferry Terminal, and drive to the terminal to park, and take the Ferry in. (Near the end of July)

Which is the best area to book in? Suburbs?

Any recommendations for hotels, we would like it to be around 150 per night, and we will be 2 nights,

We are not afraid of city driving, but want to stay in/around Staten Island for this trip.

Thanks for any help!

There are no hotels near St. George Ferry Terminal on Staten Island, or at least that do not charge by the hour. You would have to drive across the island from the west shore or take public transportation which would take even longer. Those are the standard ones recommended here. Hilton Garden, Hampton Inn, Holiday Inn and a Choice property.

There have been talks of building hotels in the area as St. George/Tompkinsville area matures, like when the Staten Island Eye is built (Ferris Wheel). We'll see.

4 people? 1 or two hotel rooms? Bed size? Exact dates? What are you going to do in NYC?

Aside from the reality of the Staten Island hotels, it will take you about an hour just to get to South Ferry in Manhattan. If you want to do something in midtown Manhattan, that's another half hour or more. That's a lot of traveling. Did you look at B&B's near the ferry?

You won't find many hotels in Staten Island. Airbnb might be a better bet. The Comfort Inn Staten Island appears to offer both free parking and a shuttle to the Staten Island Ferry. Call them directly to confirm this before booking, please.

  • 2 weeks later...

The Hampton Inn and Suites Staten Island and Hilton Garden Inn Staten Island both have a free shuttle to the ferry. You do have to make reservations for the shuttle there and back and the times available are somewhat limited.

Chris and Jeff - we've sailed together before and I've given you advice about Cape Liberty.

I'm still not sure if you're looking for 1 room or 2 rooms. For your dates I'm not seeing enough difference in price between NJ and Staten Island hotels to warrant paying the extra Turnpike toll and $15 bridge toll to stay there.

You have limited time and you want to spend it well. Staten Island doesn't meet that need. Look at Candlewood Suites in Jersey City. You can walk to the Exchange Place PATH station and go 1 stop to World Trade in NY. You can just walk to South Ferry and take your free ferry ride and then go wherever you want in Manhattan. Parking is about $20.

Also join last minute travel and look at their rates. I'm seeing the Hyatt House for 2 at a very reasonable rate. This hotel (not to be confused with the Hyatt Regency) is right at Exchange Place.

By being on the Jersey City waterfront, you will be able to enjoy the ambiance of NY both the evening you arrive and the morning you depart. If you decide to do this, post back for PATH updates - they are often doing weekend construction on the midtown line. There could be closures on your weekend that would mean that the only way into the city is to the World Trade Center. This is not a big deal, but you should know what's going on.
