We will be on Emerald next June , and while researching princess excursions so far not impressed with some of the excursions in these ports .

Any suggestions for Salerno. Been to Pompeii so would like more of a comprehensive Almafi COAST TOUR.

how about Kotor , Montenegro. And Corfu and Crete?

Has anyone been left behind from a non ship tour .

We went to Delphi from Mykonos. First, decide how many places you can see ruins on one trip and still be interested. Secondly, if you get a tour guide named "George," RUN fast. Seriously, the guy we had was so bad that he has become a family joke. We did have a good time just walking around Mykonos, shopping, etc.

Hi Maxiefurball,

In addition to the above ideas -- please check the Ports of Call sub-forum under: Europe.

Check the following threads: Greek Ports, Italian Ports, Spain Ports, and Other Mediterranean Ports. There is a ton of threads and thousands of posts to review. Good luck.

John

Hike up to the fortress in Kotor if you are mobile. It is a nice hike and the cost was reasonable (you pay the guy sitting at the bottom of the path).

After we got back down we sat and had a beer (well in full disclosure it was two), explored the town which is pretty neat, and had a plate of smoked meats and cheeses at a small restaurant.

It was a great way to spend the day.

Don't you mean DELOS ? A day trip to Delphi would have been interesting to say the least :o

On Crete visit Knossos, one of the world's most important archaeology sites - even though it has been reconstructed. After visiting Knossos, there is an excellent museum in Heraklion with the original artifacts from that site. For additional information on Knossos any book on the history of archaeology will have a chapter on Knossos and Arthur Evens the man who discovered and reconstructed it. We took a private tour there. But Princess should offer excursion there as well. Make sure your tour includes both the site and the museum.

Last fall we were on a cruise that included Naples, Kotor, and Corfu and years ago we spent a week long land vacation in Crete.

For Salerno you might check to see if APTours has tours that just includes Salerno and the Amalfi Coast. We enjoyed our Pompeii, Positano and Salerno excursion. We had vacationed in the region multiple times 30 years ago and we were impressed with the knowledge of our guides (one in the van, another in Pompeii).

In Kotor 5 of our group went on a bike ride around the bay with http://www.kotorbaytours.com/tour-de-bay-with-bikes and loved it. Since I was recovering from 2 hip replacements I took the Princess Kotor, Buda and Scenic Drive Tour. It was the first cruise line tour I had taken in years and it reminded me why: the bus was busy and a loud argument broke out right in front of me about seating, the guide was poor, etc. so I don't recommend that.

In Corfu we Toms Port Guide (www.tomsportguide) and had a great DIY.

As others noted, Crete is a large island so where you dock makes a huge difference. I second the recommendation of Knossos and the museums in Heraklion.

Kotor and Mykonos are both easily done DIY. In Kotor, simply wander through the walled village, listen to local live music and have a drink/lunch at a cafe, and shop. If you’re up for a scenic climb, hike to St. John’s Fortress for about 5 Euros pp.

In Mykonos, take the shuttle to the edge of Mykonos Town and walk from there. The town is gorgeous! Wander the streets, have lunch on the balcony of Katerina’s, visit the windmills, and get lost in the beautiful white maze of buildings.

Mykonos you can do on your own- plan a few hours and take the ferry to Delos- easy to explore on your own and there is a small museum and snack bar (take plenty of water though- the island is hot and dry and you will be walking around looking at interesting ruins), when you get back to Mykonos walk around the town area- there is a little shopping, some great tavernas for lunch and the scenic windmills to take pictures of!

We will be cruising into the port of Chania in crete

So Heraklion is out then. (Too far to go to visit Knossos and the excellent museum).

Chania is pretty much just another pretty Greek town with a harbor. Where you dock (Souda) is too far from the town (Chania) to walk but most ships offer a shuttle either free or for a small charge. There is also a local bus that sets up shop right at the port as well and takes you to Chania.

In Chania you can just stroll, shop, have a drink or a meal looking at the Venetian harbor. There's a small but interesting archaeology museum that's worth a few minutes and a local market near where the shuttles and buses drop off and pick up.

IF you are underwhelmed by Kotor's old town (especially after visiting Dubrovinik). Take a taxi to Peraus. Make it wait for you. Spend an hour or so. Take taxi back via upper road. ABout 15 euro roundtrip including waiting charges for 4 people.
