A Complete Guide for New Smoking Areas on NCL vessels

Anyone with current information on the following ships so that I can get something filled in for them?

Not for Escape.

Not on Escape. The policy on the website was written before Escape went into service.

Smokers on Escape have reported the same information that I have posted. What the website says and what a phone rep says isn't always accurate. The people giving the information that smoking is allowed on the Waterfront on Escape are giving information that doesn't apply to Escape. ...

On Escape, smoking areas are limited to: 1) Cigar lounge; 2) casino when open; 3) Spice H2O; 4) Vibe; 5; starboard side of pool (enclosed area) and 6) Haven sundeck forward.

 

There is no smoking at all outside on the Waterfront. On the Escape T/A, smoking was allowed outside at the 5 O' Clock Somewhere Bar. The following week (Nov. 14th) for the inaugural cruise from Miami, smoking was prohibited there. The reason I was told that the when the doors opened, the smoke blew across the hallway into La Cucina.

 

I was on both cruises and am a smoker. Just off the Escape May 7th so unless something has changed since then the areas listed above are correct.

P.S. On Getaway, smoking is still allowed at the outside Sunset Bar on deck 8 Waterfront.

The policy on the website has contradictory information along with overly repetitive statements.

I have written to Vivian Ewart and pointed out the contradictions and repetitions in policy.

She responded with the following:

In my opinion it helps both the smokers and the non-smokers with information to determine where to go or to avoid, Great Job.

I do have a suggestion on putting a date when it was last modified as I have noticed that areas have changed sometimes and by my understanding the management on the ships have some latitude to alter these areas to a certain extent.

In my opinion when everyone knows what to expect, there will be fewer complaints and greater enjoyment of the cruise. So hopefully this spreadsheet helps everyone since that was my intent. :D

Shoot she can SMOKE on the Garden Villa balcony! Have family members that have been doing it for over 10 years! No one to bother besides your own cabin mates....as you are above everyone else and it is not a problem for those below you a full deck.

I was on the Bliss last week. While I did not try to smoke in the cigar lounge, several people did and said it really depended on the who was in the lounge. Some didn't say anything to people smoking cigarettes but others were kicked out. Funny that they don't want cigarettes in there but cigar smokers were always up on deck 17 with us cigarette smokers :):)

The Haven also has a designated outdoor smoking area.

Regarding smoking on the Bliss, from what I read on other posts, there is only 3 places to smoke. In the enclosed casino (when open), the cigar lounge, and one section at H20 (not at the bar). If its different than that, I will post what I found, boarding Bliss this Saturday.

Just off the Bliss. Can confirm smoking only in Casino (when open AND when gambling), cigar lounge and H20 (also Haven for those staying there). While there is no smoking AT the bar in H20, the smoking section is right next to the bar and the bartenders were really good about keeping our drinks full :cool: There are about 6 tables with nice patio chairs - 2 of the tables are in a covered area and the others have umbrellas. There is also a bathroom right next to the tables. While it was a hike to get there if you are in another area of the ship it is really a nice area to hang out in. Only drawback was H20 was closed for an hour two different evenings for a private party. H20 was also closed for an entire evening for maintenance, but on that night they let us smoke somewhere at the front of the ship (maybe near Vibe???) Again, next to a bar and bathroom.

I am still not sure why NCL thinks that one unrestricted designated smoking area can adequately accommodate the anticipated number of smokers onboard. By my estimate, based on CDC data, that is about 600 people.

I am sure we will see plenty of complaints about balcony smokers on the Bliss (as there are on the Escape) because of an insufficient number of and conveniently located smoking areas. Bad weather may prevent smokers from using the one open access designated area on the Bliss. I can see people risking the cleaning fee/annoying neighbors due to inadequate accommodation.

Truly a shame for all, both non-smokers and smokers alike!

There is no justification for smoking where it is not allowed just because the smoker doesn't like the size/location of the smoking area.

I think you misread. She wasn't saying the neighbors were annoying...that she can see why people would risk annoying their neighbors if their isn't enough smoking areas.

I know smoking isn't popular but in reality if they made more accessible places then smokers would go there with no issues. When they are far and few between is when smokers can't find them or it is just impossible to get to so they light up where they can....usually trying to be away from others if possible.

I have found this at Disney too. Most parks have 1-3 smoking areas...and not convenient. Since this has happened, I now see smokers just lighting up at different spots because they don't know where to go or the spot is so ridiculously far away. Is it right? No, but if they had a few more spots it wouldn't happen nearly as much.

I read it as smokers would have to deal with the cleaning fee and/or deal with annoying neighbors....possibly deal with the cleaning fee because of being reported by "annoying" neighbors.

Having more smoking areas defeats the purpose of having smoking areas. Smoking areas are few and far between because the vast majority of people are not smokers.

On NCL's $1B ship, there are smoking areas. Smokers are allowed to smoke there. There is no excuse to smoke in areas where NCL doesn't allow it.

I think it is poor planning to not take into consideration the number of anticipated guests needing to be accommodated.

The lack of multiple pool areas creates chair hogs.

The atrium isn’t large enough to accommodate some of the events held there.

Just pointing out a recurring oversight on NCL ships.

Of course, ships are required to burn fuel in order to operate and humans don't require tobacco at all so solving 1 deadly problem is much easier than solving the other deadly problem.

Just remember this post is about smoking areas....not to argue about if you are for or against smoking. Everyone is going to have info to back up their reasons and that is fine, but this is not the post to be complaining about smoking. This is to let those who do smoke know where it is allowed to do so. If you have every been to a smoking area you will know there are a lot of people who smoke on most sailings...so cruise lines are not going to go smoke free anytime soon.
