Norwegian Joy

I just want NCL to bring in newer ships to the area - Asia, Aus and Alaska. Princess is bringing in its newest ship - the Majestic for the next season. I think it believes in the potential of the region. While NCL only has the very old Jewel. When compared with the Joy, the interiors of the Jewel looks like a run down motel. I have said enough about our recent cruise at the Jewel on a separate thread. This is the reason why I am hoping for a better ship in the region.

Royal has Quantum and Ovation in Asia, great ships like the Anthem out of New Jersey. They are expensive, but superior to NCL Jewel class ships

I don’t think that NCL is having much trouble selling the Joy. As of the end of 2017 it was apparently already fully booked through the first half of 2018.

Agree, but the point is it is not for others. I will never cruise on a 5 day smoke filled cruise set up for drinking and gambling no matter where it is.

True. I’m not a smoker or a gambler either.

Considering the target market I’m sure that Royal is planning many of the same things for the Spectrum of the Seas.

China is a HUGE market and the Chinese middle class is thirsty for travel and adventures. They are swarming Europe and have replaced the Ugly Americans as the most annoying tourists. Regardless, if you’re the CEO of a cruise line and you’re not reaching out to the Chinese market, you’re derelict in your job.

Exactly my point! I don't see that ship coming anytime soon to this part of the world.

The Encore, NCL’s next megaship will sail from Miami next year.

While on the surface the idea that it would need dry docked sounds bad, but after looking at the deck plans, it’s true. A vast majority of the public space is dedicated to 1. A large fake park, 2. A large virtual reality arcade area, 3. An oversized casino, and 4. An oversized area of shops. As others have said, this was customized to the Chinese market and won’t sell well to the American market where some of the top complaints I read are 1. Lack of deck chairs near pool (this ship has none) and 2. Casino too Smokey to use. Acknowledging cultural differences isn’t racist. While the public areas on this ship are beautiful, some would have to be re-purposes to appeal to other markets.

There is no basis for your analysis. If they moved the ship to Miami, as is, unchanged, it would sell out every week. No one would avoid sailing on her because there is too much shopping or the casino is too big. Or there is a green space where the pool is suppose to be.

Of course no one will ‘complain’ about green space (btw, not sure if you looked at pics of the park but it’s not really appealing to me, it looks like something out of the Mario brothers game), a large casino, or a large shopping area. But a boat only has so much space and space taken up by one thing takes away from other things. What people will complain about is fewer lounges, less entertainment, and less usable public space if you don’t want to sit in the casino all day. The go carts, laser tag, and the virtual realty arcade make it more of a teenagers dream than most adults. And yes, I don’t think they can sell a ship to an American market without lounge chairs near the pool. This ship may sell to families with teenagers ONLY, but families with small kids will want a splash area and will want chairs to sit on while they watch their kids.

Thanks for sharing! Large casino, HAVEN casino, upscale shopping.....I am also envious and impressed! Might have to take a look at these itineraries again....as as much as I LOVE NCL, I am oh so tired of the lack of things to buy on board....might be nice to change things up a bit!

I think the main challenge to sailing on the Joy if it remains a "Chinese" ship is that the official language on board is Mandarin. All signage, menus, Freestyle Dailies, and any other written/printed materials would be in Mandarin. All staff would speak Mandarin and all shows would be in Mandarin. I would have no qualms about sailing out of a Chinese port on a ship mostly populated with Chinese people, but I don't speak Mandarin, so it would likely be quite a challenge. It definitely looks like a beautiful ship and I couldn't give one whit about pools or loungers, so it would be right up my alley!

We were booked on the Pearl for a May 2019 Alaska cruise. I just got an email that they are moving us to the Joy as that is going to be sailing Alaska in 2019

They're going to spend $50mllion for refurb on Joy.

I am selfishly super happy about this! I wish they were offering the Joy to book on the NCL site, but as of right now it looks like they have just taken down the Pearl sailings for next year.

They still need to make a few corrections.

The H5 and H6 are called the same thing. (The Haven Courtyard Penthouse with Balcony) :')

Based on Bliss pricing there is approx 700 to $950 price difference between Bliss and Pearl, for aft cabin. This would be the only reason we stay with a bigger ship.

Wow. I’m surprised by this announcement after they were touting how well it was doing in China and how it had the highest occupancy in the fleet.

I wonder if that was all just smoke and mirrors...

Something must’ve seriously gone downhill for them to move it out of the Chinese market so quickly. Especially considering that they will have to put an additional $50 mil into converting it for the North American market.

Or maybe Alaska is simply that much MORE profitable than China that they are willing to abandon their chinese future roadmap for now...
