Ovation sailing into Dunedin 10 Dec

Recommended Posts

I thought she was only due to dock today?

Yes . She sailed in at 11.30 this morning and is staying overnight and leaving tomorrow at 5pm .

I think it must have something to do with the tides .

While watching for her to sail past the Albatross cam , I looked at the port cam and you can see, as above , a dredge which was working on the channel. Must have been making sure there was enough clearance for her.

Ovation of the Seas was meant to be in Fiordland today, but due to the weather, she came to Port Chalmers a day early and as Kiwi Kruzer said, will send overnight in port.

Regatta was meant to be in Akaroa today, but due to strong winds at the heads of Akaroa, she could not get in, so she also went to Port Chalmers early and is also spending overnight in port.

Shame they missed the sounds, at least they get to be in a port for an extra evening.

same thing happened with us on Ovation in Jan - we got in early due to the weather = and stayed overnight.

love this video - and we get to see ourselves on the balcony - just above the last yellow tender @ the 56sec mark.

At least you got a fuller day in arriving at 11.30... it was SHOCKING there when we landed....wet and windy :)

Ovation has been joined by Regatta. Both ships are overnighting in Dunedin.

Ovation is also in Port Chalmers on Feb 14th. She arrives an hour before the Diamond Princess, which I will be on.

Of course not everybody will get off, but still, 4500 passengers on Ovation and 2500 on Diamond, that's a potential 7000 people looking for excursions and shuttle buses.

What's the usual process at port for shuttle buses into town? First in first served, or can you book a ticket?

I don't fancy getting into a queue behind a couple of thousand Ovation passengers.

ECCK... but then again well we were at Port Chalmers / Dunedin in Jan17 we had the Ovation (us) and the Solstice in on the same day.

What I found with Port Chalmers was there is a local bus service, that is MILES CHEAPER than the ones organised by the cruises - just make sure you have some cash.

I also NOTE that they have improved the timetables - when I was there the return bus back was 'blocked out' for nearly 3hrs (a gap that requried walking around the cold city)

EDIT : and what is with that bird in the pics ?? stuffed ??? ;)

That is from the Royal Albatross webcam , set up on the heads at the nesting colony. Bonus is you get to see the ships as they pass by.
