You can walk to the stores from where it docks. If you are embarking from Puerto Rico, then you need to take a taxi to the shopping area.

Well said. If you are coming from Miami or Fort Lauderdale, your ship will stop in Old San Juan. There are major U.S. based drug stores there so if you forgot something, the stores are right there. The old forts are up at the top of the hill and it is a nice walk. El Morro is definitely worth visiting.

AFAIK, both of the forts are still closed, with no reopening dates published. But the open areas in front are open to the public.

That is a shame. Those are incredible fortresses. In any case, the views from those areas are incredible and worth the walk.

If you have a National Park Pass, you can get free admission (when they re-open).
