Good news for Lightroom users

Adobe Lightroom Classic users have been pining for a serious performance update for ages—even Adobe admitted that Lightroom performance was lackluster, and improving it was 'top priority.' Well, it looks like 'top priority' is going to pay off very soon.

Late last week, Adobe told DPReview that it has a significant Lightroom Classic performance update in the works. The update—which is "coming soon"—is supposed to improve performance across the board for anybody using a multi-core machine with at least 12GB of RAM. Or, in Adobe's own words:

In this upcoming Lightroom Classic 7.2 release, we were able to make significant strides with our partners at Intel on addressing key performance issues. We have optimized CPU and memory usage so that performance will scale better across multiple cores on computers with at least 12 GB of RAM.

Adobe claims the update will result in:

• Faster import and preview generation
  
• Faster walking of images in the Loupe View
  
• Faster rendering of adjustments in Develop
  
• Faster batch merge operations of HDR/Panos
  
• Faster export
  

A welcome upgrade if it lives up to predictions.

How's the Luminar experiment coming along?

I've revisited the workflow issue after tracking down the way the Luminar plugin works in Lightroom (more on that mess in my next installment) and will be posting some LR vs. Luminar results from the cruise we just returned from.

I am impressed with the processing power and the way it is presented to the user, but until the Luminar version of Lightroom's image organization is available, a full workflow comparison isn't really possible.

I briefly used photomechanic... just because the initial lightroom upload is SO painful. I may be shooting a wedding in a few months.... this would be fantastic.

Honestly, the best way I found to improve the upload speed was a new USB 3.0 card reader for my XQDs. Cut the load time by about 30 percent. SDXC almost 50 percent versus the onboard slot.
