A guidebook on Hawaii will really be helpful....Maui is EASY to drive about....no worries. The RTH isn't a good idea unless you have an entire day to kill....takes way too long, and there's so much other cool stuff to see!

I recommend the Shaka Guide app that you download onto your phone. They have four tours on Maui, but three involve the Road to Hana. You can download free and then look at the tours before you decide to buy one. The Guide tours worked really well for us on Oahu and Kauai. They use GPS to follow you and tell you about whereever you are along the tour.

  • 2 weeks later...

While we've never dropped anchor at Lahaina, we have stayed on the west coast of Maui several times. If you rent a car, realize that traffic on the highway (only 2-lane, unless they've widened it in the last few yrs) in west Maui in the afternoons can be very heavy (in both directions, I think), esp. from Lahaina south. For example, you might want to drive to Mt Haleakala. While it's only 60 mi from Lahaina and google maps says it takes a little under 2 hrs one would want to allow much more than that to get back to your ship in time.

We rented a car and drove to Hana thinking it would not take long. With the winding road, traffic, etc it took hours to just reach Hana then there was the long drive back. End result most of a day shot on this adventure. We were staying at a hotel and had the time to spend.

Curious if you turned around and retraced your steps or did what our tour did: making a huge circle trip, around Haleakela, etc. and eventually heading back north to Kahului. Seeing the "back side" of Haleakela was interesting and different from its NW side, the usual way to reach the summit. Ours took all day, too, but since it was a commercial tour, we were aware of the time involved. I would hope guide books would indicate the time involved; course it also depends on how many stops you make, how long you stay, etc. (our tour stopped at least 3 times, maybe more).
