You have good taste in rum!

We purchased Havana Club Anejo 3 Anos rum last week at Esquire Liquor in Nassau. We happened upon this store since it is across the street from the Hilton British Colonial Hotel where we had booked day passes (well worth it). $15.60 per 1 litre bottle and they accept credit cards.

Excellent! Thank you very much! Our plan is the walk to the John Watling distillery so we will make a swing by Esquire Liquor as well. Thanks again!

Going to be at BCH next week. Can you explain the process of bringing back the bottle? I'd like to bring a couple Havana Clubs back home. Thank you!!

Most cruise lines will confiscate your alcohol when you get on board. But you'll get it back on the last night or the morning of debarkation.

Not sure which cruise line you will be on, but on Carnival when you come back aboard the ship they will have signs directing you to a table where they will collect your bottles of alcohol. They will give you a collection receipt that you will take to the return point on the last morning. You give them the receipt and they give you your bottles.

But is it legal to bring it into the United States? How strict are customs?

Oh yes, you can bring rum to the States. You have a certain amount that is duty free and above that, you have to pay the duty (taxes) on it. You have to declare it on your customs card when you go through customs but it is legal. We've brought back alcohol many times.

Here is the link to what you can bring back duty-free: https://www.cbp.gov/travel/international-visitors/kbyg/types-exemptions

Nothing in the link specific to Cuba. It used to be that you couldn't bring any Cuban products into the United States. A while back, I had a bottle of Havana Club confiscated at JFK that I purchased at the airport in Madrid.

I Googled it, but all I found in the guvmnt sites was a bunch of double speak. They said you can bring rum from Cuba, but said nothing about bringing Cuban rum in from another country.

Can anyone help me out?

You can bring $100 worth of alcohol from Cuba back and $400 tobacco from Cuba. I would assume if you can bring it directly from Cuba that Bahamas is fine. But I understand if you don't want to "assume" either.

I've been told that the best bet is not to mention that the rum comes from Cuba on the declaration form. Just list "Liquor -(X) bottles" and total value. Also, I've heard you can save some trouble by going to the customs briefing that they have on board and getting your declaration form approved and stamped in advance.

There you go. That sounds reasonable. Thanks.

You're welcome! I will say that I have brought back anywhere from 4 to 16 bottles on various cruises and have only had customs even look twice at me one time. The agent I got in Jacksonville made me pay duty on my overage bottles in 2012. Had 8 bottles and the duty on the 6 I was over came out to $11 and change.

Last time Havana Club rums were imported into Nassau,Bahamas was November,2015. Burns House was the local importer at the time but they recently have gone through a name change.(700 liquors) Currently,(December 2016), all the remaining stocks have been sold off and it's nearly impossible to find any HC rum on the island. The new importer has discontinued its importation of Havana Club rums until further notice. :(

On a brighter note,it is currently legal to import as much Cuban rum and cigars from any country you can buy it in. (mail order excepted) Of course, you are subject to paying tax on amounts over your exemption, although customs rarely bothers to actually collect it. (within reason) Tax is around $2 per bottle.

Just returned from another trip to the Bahamas.Nothing has changed regarding Havana Club rum.Saw a total of 2 bottles of the selection de maestros expression in a week long trip.Priced at $115 and $127 (2 different stores) this is at least double the price you could buy it for anywhere else in the world. No other expressions were available anywhere, and no plans to import any from the main importer;700 wines. :(

As a side note,Cuban cigars are always readily available and start at $10 a stick.

That's good to hear. I have always brought back lots from St. Thomas (most was 22 bottles, 4 adults traveling) and was never really asked. Worried about bringing it back from Nassau. They have always waved me through but only with 5 or 6.

That's disappointing to hear. I didn't pick any up last year as all I found was a couple bottles of 3 year for $30+ a bottle and Seleccion de Maestros was $120+, way over what they should have been.

Oh well, we are planning on doing an 8 or 9 day southern itinerary in a few years and are trying to find a cruise that hits Jamaica and the Dominican republic for next year, so maybe I'll come across some then.

I have most of the brands currently being produced in Cuba. There are only a few rum distilleries across the country,so the exact same rum is often marketed under a few different brand names and price points. One example would be Havana Club 7 anos.It is the most expensive and most easily found, although Caney centuria,Varadero 7,and Caribbean Club 7 are all the same, exact, product.

The brands I currently have represented are :

Arecha

Caney

Caribbean Club

Corsario

Havana Club

Legendario

Matusalem

Mulata

Santiago de Cuba

Varadero

Bottles were brought back from Bahamas,Canada,Cuba,Dominican Republic,England,Germany,Italy,Mexico and Spain. Most Cuban rums are very good but the brands I would generally pass on are Arecha, Corsario, and Mulata.:D

Airlines will allow up to 5 liters of liquor per person in your checked luggage. Most common size of Cuban rum is a 70 cl bottle so you can carry back 7 bottles per person legally, although you may have to pay duty of $2 a bottle at customs.

Although it is now legal to buy and import Cuban rum and cigars from any country you can find them in,it is still illegal to mail order or sell it in the US due to the embargo.

Oops, forgot to mention the Cubay brand... Another really good one if you can find it. Been available in Cuba since 1960 but rarely exported.

One thing that makes the Cuban rum bottles stand out in the stores is that green Cuban govt. guarantee sticker.

Thanks for the info. I get my Havana Club in St. Kitts usually. I've never been over to the area by the Hilton, and most of the time head straight to the Atlantis casino. We'll be back in Nassau the end of June, so Esquire will be my first stop to grab a few bottles.

I'm back in Nassau, and so is Havana Club rum! ;p Not available everywhere but if you look around, you will find it.Price on 1 liter 7 year old varies widely from $29 to $48 depending where you buy it. 3 year old 1 liter is $16 to $25.

Cuban liquor store across from senior frogs has 375ml flasks of white or gold label for $19 which is way overpriced and their 1 liter 7 year old bottle was $38.
