Future Cruise Deposit - Should we get this? Quick FCD/FCC 101 please

Sorry to sound so ignorant/uniformed!

We have sailed Princess, but never knew, with any certainty, that we might plan a second cruise. So we have never done this.

I am just hoping for some quick general info.

How does this work...

Should we do this for a possible future cruise?

How does it benefit us, or save money?

Yes, do it. You pay the $100 per person, you get extra OBC (for the next cruise), if you dont use it in 2 years you get your $100 back.

FCD's enable you to have a cruise deposit of $100. for any itinerary other than a World Cruise. There is no discount on the total cost of your cruise.

Using your FCD will give you a per person OBC in an amount based on type of cabin and length of cruise. OBC's typically run from $25-$100.

FCD's are $100. ea, good for 2 years after which, if not used, will be refunded.

FCD's are per person...so if you only buy one you will only get the credit for one person. If you want the credit for both yourself and spouse, buy two FCD's.

On 7-13 day cruises you get OBC equal to your deposit, longer cruises get 2.5 times your money back in OBC. $50 OBC for 6 days or less.

If we are looking at a 15 day cruise, then if we do a $100.00 per person deposit, we could get $250.00 in OBC.

That is significant.

Is this a generic future deposit, or do you actually book onboard???

Or, depending... not sure if one should book onboard as well.

There is no $$ advantage to booking onboard. The only FCD limiter is that you must book within 2 years of the purchase of your FCD.

The one possible advantage of booking onboard might be cabin selection. However, the waiting line to speak with the attendant has always been so daunting that we have never booked onboard.

It is generic. You have up to 2 years to use it before it's refunded back to you. You do not have to book your next cruise on the ship now.

If you are thinking of doing Princess again then a must buy.

I'm not sure if clear to the OP. You cannot just go and buy a FCD while "on land". You need to wait until you do your next cruise and then buy them on board for future cruises. The only other way is if you can do a BVE prior to wanting to book your next cruise - and that is only practical if you are near a port offering them or you will waste that OBC in travel expenses.

Actually, if you approach the 2 year limit, if you write a nice note to the Captains Circle folks at Princess, they will likely extend for another 2 years.

Background: FDC's were originally good for 4 years. It changed about 3 or 4 years ago to the 2 year limit.

They're getting fussy about extending the time limit lately. Years ago it wasn't any problem but last year they wouldn't let me extend one unless it was booked.

you have to book 17 -44 days to get the most OBC

If you have a savings deposit of $100 in a bank, better to use it on FCD for more yield if you cruise frequent on Princess.

Cruises113 gave you the OBC breakdown which is based on length of cruise and cabin category. Four other points that I didn't see explained fully.

FCD's are per person and not transferable. If there are two of you you have to purchase one in each name. The order form fully shows this.

FCD's are purchased while on board.

The purchase of FCD's is charged directly to your credit card on the evening of purchase. It is not part of your on board account.

If you plan on taking b2b's purchase two each. Many times net cost is better when you book as two cruises instead of one. We always have some in reserve, but we cruise Princess a lot.

The price you pay for the FCD ($100 per FCD) is refunded if not used within the time limit to the credit card that was used to purchase it.

To buy a FCD onboard you must use a credit card. If you used cash to set up your onboard account, you must provide a credit card for any FCD you wish to purchase.

You can buy and use more than 1 at a time, but it won't make a difference on the OBC. You get the OBC based on ONE FCD only.

And to OP you should also look at buying (or having your 401K buy) 100 shares of Carnival Stock

We booked within the 2 years, but didn't sail for 3. Our last FCD was purchased in August of 2014 and we just got off the cruise we used it on.
