Mendenhall Glacier and gold panning

We are taking our first cruise next July to Alaska and I am trying to find an excursion in Juneau. I'm interested in visiting Mendenhall Glacier and I think my 14 year old son would enjoy panning for gold. So far I have not found an excursion that includes both. What would be the best way to do this? Thanks for your help.

I don't think a 14 yr old would like the gold panning as well as say the whale watching tour or something else more adventures for his age, unless he has decided that is what he really wants to do. It is not in a lake or spring and the packet of dust they give you has a little bit of gold in it that will be very small to say the least. Search the ports and see what they have to offer and get an idea of what interest all of you, then decide what you all want to do. Have a great time.

We did the Mendenhall Glacier and Dog Sledding last June! I think any child would love the helicopter ride to the glacier...Touring the glacier on dog sleds. Spending time with the sled dogs. On ours they even had lots of puppies to pet. Awesome adventure!

We live not far from Reed Gold Mine in NC - the first commercial gold claim in the US. You can still pan for gold and people still find it there. Took my son when he was around 13 and he was quickly bored with it.

Just sayin......
