I did it for my 50th birthday with just my sister! I got the master...she got the last bedroom down the hall and we used to middle bedroom to store our luggage! We also hosted the Cruise Critic sailaway party there! I bet I’d never be able to afford that again!

A couple of years ago on the Gem the people who booked the villa never showed up. So the first night there was a raffle in the casino. A couple in their seventies came in right at the last minute, grabbed two tickets and won the villa for the rest of the 11 day cruise. The best part was that the wife was really happy because she thought that she had won some free play or chips for the casino. When she found out what they had actually won she said something like "oh now we have to repack and unpack our stuff again". They were discussing if they should take it or not. This was all being done over the microphone. The whole place was laughing and yelling how bad the villa was and to not take it and draw another ticket. It was better than a comedy act. In the end they took it and had help moving from the staff.

My husband and I grabbed up a great price on a repositioning cruise, Vancouver to Los Angeles, on the Star a few years ago.

The star has the largest GV in the fleet, unless the Dawn's ties it. It was quite an experience. Went through a storm that eliminated a port stop or 2, but we didn't mind. It is an experience we were glad to have, but it did seem kind of like 'over kill' having 5594 sq ft to ourselves!

I actually lost my husband when I went to the casino one night. Upon returning, he was no where to be found. The butler said "Oh mam, this is not good". We soon found him napping in one of the bedrooms we weren't using.

Snap it up if the price is okay for you, for a once in a lifetime experience. Limo service to the airport at the end was nice, and the butler and room steward were more than attentive (more than we normally like), as they just appeared from time to time in the suite through openings in the walls. That part was a bit weird.

What a waste of money for just 2 people.

Give it to charity and get a normal suite.

All depends - we give to various charities and if the chance opened I would jump on it. It may be a waste to you but for us "older folk" it would be a dream trip for us as we do not know how much longer we will be able to cruise.

How is it a waste of money? It depends on the cost of the upgrade and what other things they will take advantage of.

I have a 20 day RP coming up, I would do the GV in a heartbeat and it would be worth every penny I was willing to put into the bid, if only to have the view, the privacy, and the private hot tub.

And yes, I would probably do what was mentioned above and have a sail away party for our RC group just to take advantage of the room.

Plus I would take full advantage of it for photo ops. Because there is no way I would spend what they ask for the room normally.

I️ almost agree however what I️ would do would be to bring along some other family or friends. Just 2 people does seem like a waste when others could join and enjoy it.

For those of us who book lower cost cabins to sail more frequently, tell me about the garden villas. How many bedrooms and how many people would normally be in one?

Thinking of springing for a family cruise one of these days as a bucket list thing....

Thanks in advance.

My husband and I sailed in the Garden Villa on the Star in Australia this year. My husband booked it as an upgrade. The ship lost total propulsion outside of Melbourne and had to be towed back to port, so we ended up cutting our cruise short by several days. We hated leaving the Garden Villa as we really enjoyed the extra space and butler service.

It did feel very strange staying there with just the two of us, but have decided if the opportunity presents itself we would love to do it again with our extended family.

All kind of cruising is waste of money when people around the world are starving but this is a cruiseforum!

If you prefer to give to charity instead of using your money to cruise it's nice of you,

We had a chance to upsell to one on the Gem but the price was too high for just 2 of us. If we had the kids on that trip, maybe.

Its funny, we were offered the GV on the DAWN as an upsell before the bidding process started. There were only 2 of us so we chose to upsell to a DOS. As it was, I loved being in the DOS. If it wasn't just my husband and I we would have jumped on the chance to be in the GV.

you must have been a bernie sanders voter, telling people to give away their hard earned money to others.

i work hard for everything i have, and i will spend my money on whatever i wish to spend it on, whether its vacation, charity, booze, cigarettes, or an outrageous suite.
