The fire just started less than 15 hours ago, so a little hard to give experiences or predict what is going to happen today. New fires much closer to San Diego could start. Who knows?

If things stay as they are, it is not likely you will be affected.

The "Thomas Fire" as it's being called is in Ventura County, in the mountains just to the north of the city of Ventura...

I live on the edge of Ventura County and this fire isn't even affecting me...

Yes, the winds have been very strong around here the past couple of days...but these are not the typical hot Santa Ana winds that bring the greatest fire danger. These are still Santa Anas, but during a cooler season, so they are not bringing the very hot dry air.

The Santa Ana condition is when the winds blow in the reverse direction of the predominant wind pattern (coming off the moderating Pacific Ocean). Instead, the wind pattern reverses and blows from the High Desert. As the air masses travel over the coastal mountain ranges, and drop in elevation, they actually pick up heat...so, you get dry hot air masses blowing toward the coast--typically very strong winds--and, as they pass through mountain areas, tend to funnel through canyons and passes. When this happens in summer months, you tend to get temperatures in the 90s in these areas...and humidity is near zero...Ripe for fire hazard. The vegetation in our local mountain areas is what we call "Chaparral"--it's a lot of scrub plants which are naturally filled with a sort of oil. They actually depend on fire to hatch their seeds and regenerate. Because we humans like to put out fires, rather than quietly regenerating every year, these plants tend to overgrow--resulting in major brush fires when they do finally get the fire they require.

I am guessing though, that the current fire is NOT a naturally occurring one, rather was set by humans--either intentionally or accidentally--and, being in an area not recently burned by other fires, has plenty of available "fuel"...and, then, the strong winds, even though they are not hot, are still enough to spread the flames. Most of our mountain areas are largely inaccessible--so hard to combat the fires with trucks and ground personnel and requiring air support. The usual tactic is to try to protect densely populated areas while clearing some brush areas to "contain" the fire. There are limits as to where this one can spread as everything to the south is well populated so those areas have a lack of combustible brush. The fire departments will make a stand at the houses along that perimeter.

Meanwhile, rest assured, this is NOWHERE near any of the port areas of Southern California.

If you were driving down then you might have problems. Some of the freeways have been closed. Some have reopened with escorts. For the most part, there are alternate routes for us to take. Haven’t heard of any fires in the San Diego area.

You shouldn’t have any problems flying.
