Salerno

Is there anything to do in Salerno? For that matter, do you disembark the ship near town in Salerno? We are thinking of going on an excursion to Sorrento/Amalfi after we dock, and were wondering if there is a place we could eat in Salerno after our excursion.

The port is a large industrial port which you cannot walk out of so there will be free port buses which drop you in town. Last time we were there the port bus dropped us in Piazza Santa Lucia (look on Googlemaps). However they were building a brand new cruise terminal which may well be open now and thus arrangements could be different.

Salerno is quite a big town with many many restaurants. You can choose one along the seafront (Lungomare), along the road which runs parallel (Via Roma) where there are a number of good restaurants or, my choice, wander into the old town and eat at one of the many restaurants in the side streets there.

Nope, not yet. They completed and inaugurated the new cruise port building a couple of years ago but it can't be used for anything other than conferences and meeting space until they do the dredging work necessary to allow cruise ships to access it, and that work hasn't even started yet.

I'm inferring from some things I've read that they went through the exercise of asking for proposals for the concessions at the station but have finally suspended even that since there's no opening date in sight.

Here's one editorial from last month lamenting the lack of progress: http://www.cronachesalerno.it/tempi-lunghi-per-il-dragaggio-stop-alla-gara-per-laffidamento-della-stazione-marittima/
