I cruised on her in 1986 and yes she was a mgnificent ship. At that time she was the largest cruiseship in the world. To bad she is no longer. :( I do have some good pictures of her though.:)

Our first cruise was on the Norway in January '93. Sad to see that she has been turned to scrap. I had read that she was sold to "breakers" and you can find he demise on Youtube. It's just sad to watch A Great Lady.

The Norway was a ship that always made me get a lump in my throat looking at her.

It was like a stand up and sing moment when I looked her from a tender or shore.

I saw several Broadway shows over the years aboard the Norway......among them

P.T. Barnum and Meet Me in St Louis. Can't remember all the entertainers, but Jim

Nabors was a standout. Nothing like that at sea any more.

Yes, I also loved the Norway. We sailed twice on her. And just yesterday, as I was cleaning out my closet I found a plastic hanger from the SS France. At one time, I was collecting cruise memoribilia and picked it up at a yard sale. (honest....I did not steal it!)

Once, when we were in the Dining Room eating the firefighters came through, all clad in their outfits holding fire extinguishers....a small kitchen fire. Everyone thought it was part of an act. Didn't have my camera....sigh.

I had the good fortune to do a transatlantic crossing on her in 1963 when she was the France and had her original French interiors. She was a wonderful, elegant liner with the greatest food. That's where I learned to appreciate escargot! I never cruised on her when she was the Norway. NCL filled her original First Class dining room with tables for ten. It just wasn't the same, but I am glad that she had several more years of service. Pictures of her demise can be seen here but beware, they aren't for the faint hearted. Scroll down to the end of the page to see how a great ship is turned into paperclips and razor blades.

Wow - that really brought back some memories. I too did a transatlantic crossing with my parents back in 1972 or 1973 when she was the France - so elegant and beautiful. I remember the wonderful gourmet food and all the ladies in their long gowns and the men in their tuxedos.

My husband and I cruised to the caribbean with her after the change to SS Norway, in the late 80's. A different feel but still a great ship.

I wonder if there's a site that exists that has cabin photos? Or deck plans?

It was my first cruise and even though I spent the first 2 or 3 days horribly seasick in my cabin, I loved it! (After I got my sea legs that is!)

My mother booked an interior lower deck cabin - bunk beds, pipes coming through the room (ala' the handcuff scene in the Titanic) and I swear the toliet was in the room itself. I made friends with another teenage girl who was sailing with her grandparents - when I visited her room it was like a Love Boat room! A couch, a porthole ... lots of grand space!! Oh, how the other class lives!

Thank you for these links. So far, I've only had the time to look at the 2001 Transatlantic pictures - but wow! They really brought back memories of the Norway as well as of Sept. 11. Got choked up at the NYC photos. Little did anyone on board realize how historic those photos would be. (I was working near the WTC on 9/11.)

Will have to explore the other links, though I'm not sure I'm ready to see the great lady's demise. :-(

I went on this ship in 1972 it was my first cruise it was glorious then I wonder how wonderful is she now? do they still have the sea giant in the front by the dining room. Neptune? he was all in Gold when we were there. I was 16 then and he was wonderful. Mom sent me on this for my high school graduation. i graduated earlier than my classmates I was in the honor society so if I did not graduate then my internship at Julliard School of Music would have been a waste.

I went there for 3 years then to the Fashion Institute of tech for 2 more years, got out with a degree in fashion management then Went into Funeral directorship. Designed my own fashionable caskets, selling them at 12,000.00 each.

Made a good living for ahwhile. To the rich and famous. Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison's family bought one of my caskets, and we inturn sold the rights to Bates Casket company, when I retired last year.

I thought that this is the way to go but not everyone else thinks like this.

We had alot of differnet designs from teddy bears to snakes.

Gee, I haven't seen that web site in years, so thanks for the memories.

We were on that crossing, and I recognize many friends in some of those photos both onboard and on the pier in New York, where we boarded. My review (written at the time) is here: http://www.cupcaked.com/reviews/norway.html

The link and photos refer to her September 2, 2001 sailing. I was sailing on Carnival's Paradise out of Miami on that day. The first photo shows us docked in Miami behind the Norway.

I remember it was a beautiful sight watching the Norway pull out of port. I do not recall how many tugs were spraying water as she was leaving but it was an emotional experience. I have it all on video now.

In the 'old days' we did the Norway and to me she was the grand damme of her cruise line. I always enjoyed her and deliberately booked to be on her.

I think when they scrapped the ship they showed the direction they chose to go - sad but true.

She was elegant, full of wood and maybe not the type that some people would like, but I always found her to be elegant and enjoyoyble.

Miss her very much. Jacqui
