Tell me why I should(n’t) sail Radiance

Recommended Posts

Agent is seeing what they can do. It’s a common problem, our NCL cruise in December 🤞 🤞 🤞 we could have got a guarantee for about 1,500 ec, but an accessible is only B.B. so over 2,000.

I guess it’s just something I have to learn to live with.

Could you translate for me? specifically I’d like to know the meaning of “guarantee” in this context and “B.B”

Cheers

Guarantee Balcony cabin means you pay for the very lowest category of balcony cabin but you could be allocated into any category of balcony cabin or even a higher category cabin like suite or such . BB is a category of Balcony cabin that is generally low and midship.:D

Thanks.

The whole process sounds very complicated

In this case the offer was on a B2 or B6 which meant a Balcony cabin, B2 being what Royal see as a better Lagan B6, but you could pick a partcular cabin. Unfortunately there are no accessible cabins In either of those categories, I said they were all in B.B., which in hindsight was wrong, that was one of my cruises on another line. Most lines will name their cabins I (inside) O (oceanview) B (balcony) etc, some will then follow that with a number others with a letter, to indicate how they regard the quality of that location.

So if you pay the guarantee prices that it, or do you have to pay more later? I only ask because you said that the guarantee price was something like $2k for a 34 day cruise.

You pay the guarantee price only. If you're lucky enough to get an upgrade you do a happy dance!

The downside to guarantees is that you could end up with the worst cabin on the ship.

BTW the guarantee Gut was looking at was about $5,800 for the 34 night cruise, not $2000.

No extra to pay.

The cheap fairs were on a guarantee B6 or B2, it was between 5,500 and 6,000. That means you got a cabin in one of those categories but couldn’t pick the actual cabin, it increased about 2,000 each when I needed an accessible cabin.

If you meant where I say I paid 2,000 for a BB that is a different cruise, that I used to show that this issue of the price of the lowest price balcony jumping dramatically when you need an accessible cabin isn’t unique to a Royal Caribbean cruise, and was a secpven day cruise on Norwegian Jewel.

We are just back from a Seward to Vancouver cruise on Radiance. We love RCCL’s Radiance class and have done two TA’s on the Brillance...Baltic on the BOS in Aug. 2019 and transpacific on the ROS in April 2020. We love the light and glass of this class as well as the size. We don’t cruise for the shows or the food or the casino-rather for a comfy atmosphere for relaxing and enjoying being on the high seas. We have found the crew on both ROS and BOS to be exceptional in customer service with a friendly style of ensuring we have a great experience. While ROS may seem ‘shabby chic’ compared to the newer and bigger ships, we love it!

That’s a huge increase. I suppose accessible cabins are rarer so they can charge a lot more for them.

But $8K is very cheap for a 34 day cruise isn’t it?

Not really, about average, 33 on Diamond Princess was about $7500 mid ship extended balcony. 35 Sea Princess Hawaii round trip about $9000 next year for accessible mini suite, so 8000 is more or less on the mark, hence $5,800 was a good deal that I was keen to jump on.

Have cruised Radiance, Explorer and Ovation on RCI. Have to say our 3 cruises on Radiance, relatively long ones at 14-16 nights each, were great. Service was wonderful and staff very helpful. Sometimes the entertainment was hit and miss but there was usually something available that was worth going to. Food quality and choice seems to have diminished over the years. However, love the ship ambiance, layout and the fact that its light and airy with all the glass. We too love to sit and read or relax on our balcony so not too fussed about daily activities on sea days and anyway these days these seem to be more "sales" activities rather than anything else.

Wouldn't go on a Voyager class ship again. Am doing a Trans Pacific on Ovation in 2020 as well. But all in all Radiance is our favorite..

Thanks for the education.

I know little about the prices of cruises because my wife does all the booking and arranges the payment. But I’m sure our 16 day cruise with SeaDream is going to be up there with those prices. She tells me that it’s OK because it’s all inclusive, which means that you don’t have to spend anything on board for drinks, etc.

I wonder ...:confused::)

Sea dream are in a different class.

Think 5 or 6 Star v 3 Star in hotel ratings. Plus pretty much all inclusive. As non drinkers all inclusive doesn’t always work too good for us.

Mrs Gut and I are limited to cruises departing AND returning Sydney, for health reasons so are pretty much limited to the major lines, normally sail Princess, but also Celebrity, about to try Norwegian, have been with others but keep coming back to Princess mainly because they offer a lot of Sydney Sydney itineraries.

We used to want a mid ship balcony on a deck with cabins above and below on Princess or Celebrity would pay 200-250 pp per night, Cunard was a bit more, nearly $300 pp pn.

Friends sailed a lot with Silverseas and paid more a day Than we pay for a week. But they also normally booked a suite.

Thank you for your explanations. They are appreciated.

Is there a healthy smattering of passengers from other countries on cruises ex Sydney? I ask because my wife and I always feel like we are really on holiday when we meet a lot of people from abroad. That is why the only cruise we did in Australia was on a Ponant ship between Cairns and Sydney. The ship had come from Europe and had a lot of French people on board.

All our other cruises have been from foreign ports to foreign ports.

The % of foreign passengers can vary greatly by itinerary and line. For example the round Australia cruise I was looking at that started this thread would have more overseas passengers that just local cruises. A cruise like yours on Ponant which was probably a world cruise and a line that only visits, does a couple of short cruises and goes is likely to have a much higher percentage as they boarded somewhere and stayed on till they get back.

A little while ago we did 5 nights on Queen Mary 2 (a Cunard ship) to Tasmania, it was a short part of a Workd Cruise, I guess Aussies would have been about 10%, a few months later we did a similar trip on Emerald Princess, but it was just a single cruise, Aussies were 90%+.

I don't agree with that comment, but you may end up with the worst cabin in the category that you paid for.

Come on Mr Gut book the Radiance, I am sure all at CC would like to see you go "Over the Top".!!!

Been over the top.

Did an almost identical cruise a couple of years back on Diamond Princess.

I’ve got a hold down on this one, if I can get an accessible cabin it will be a near cert, if I can’t it will depend on me getting the $$$ together for a wheelchair that will fold to go through the door of a standard balcony.

Just remember that it is not just the chair that has to get through the doorway.;p
